Was just there again last week. There was a ton of Cylonians. Went on the tram up the mountain and there were some on there who chatted my ear off. Was excellent.
I've been to Memorial Stadium four times. In 99 and 01, NU fans were pretty cordial because they knew the games would be a romp -- and they were. In 2005, there were several NU fans after the game that literally apologized that their team won. They knew NU had no business winning that game. In 2007, they were pretty reserved...more of a wait-and-see attitude before the game.
Additionally, I had a great football conversation with a Husker fan in the Detroit airport, of all places, on my way to the Army game in '05.
They're not all bad. Maybe the reason the "bad ones" come to Ames is because they can't afford to get tickets in Lincoln.
I must reiterate in my experience in an equally cornsucker/hackeye rich environment that kNU fans are better in every way, they are:
more knowlegdeable (ironically)
politer (even if typically more redneck)
But mostly they don't use every excuse under the sun why they lost. When I asked a fusker relative of mine what happened in the Kansas game his response was, "They whipped us." Not one excuse and not one comment about ISU. Image that coming out of a hackeye's mouth.
When we lived in Nebraska, we found both kinds easily accessible.
For instance, we met an older Husker at a basketball game (we've started a tradition of seeing the ISU game at the Devaney Center). We were having a nice conversation until he asked, "So, you're been fans for a while." My wife answered, "Oh, no, we're Cyclone fans. Erik graduated from there."
He turned and stared straight ahead, and didn't acknowledge us again.
At the Lincoln Applebee's, they changed the channel so we could watch ISU-TCU in the Houston bowl game, and the whole restaurant was watching and getting into it (on our side:smile:).
Or, my favorite. We road tripped to Devaney this year. We went to Ruby Tuesday's for lunch, and one little boy said to his dad, "Dad, look, CYCLONES!"
It was awesome:yes:
We had a lot of Cyclone fans around us, but they were mostly quiet, like they'd been trained not to be too loud about it around those parts.
I enjoyed watching Lil' Red come up to Cyclone Alley and 'act' surprised about the reception he got. I thought he played the whole thing up really well on the way up.
I will throw the Husker Nation a bone and say this about the majority of the Bugeaters you will run into at the Jack:Quote:
This I agree with. Sat in the hillside back in 2000 or something for an ISU-Nebraska game - many Husker fans around us and not a one that seemed decent, nor intelligent.
They chase off all the high class play. The only trade that comes in are nothing but the bummers and the drovers, just the dregs.
These guys you run into tailgating are tavern huskers that either can't afford or get ahold of tickets in Lincoln.
I see Knebraska winning 5-6 games with the game in Ames not being one of them.
If they get lucky against either KU or KSU, they might reach 6 wins.
It probably depends on momentum for their team. If they have a poor preseason it may snowball. Barney will make the difference.
Nebraska will be good because they hired a coach that wasnt good enough for the AD 4 years ago. TO is back at the Univ and he has forgot more about option football than most of us have ever known. I think the NU fan base is stuck in the past.
Why was NU good in the past. They would take hardworking Nebraska kids, put them in a weightroom, watch them become huge and over power the other team. Then they would put a few athletes on the team from Texas or Calf and run the ball down your throat. They are the only DI school in the state so every kid's dream is to become a Husker it is all they know.
Today, most schools have a good weight program and you have to be athletic to play anywhere on the field. The game is more about speed now than power. When Nebraska is average it is harder for them to go to Texas or Calf to get players. The good instate players get chances to go elsewhere and know there is more out there than NU. Kids still want to play there but most are not DI materal.
Thats just my take.
Remember Bill C was suppose to return the order.
It is funny that Chizik and BP have similar resumes but BP gets so much more credit and love than Chizik.
As for my opinion of Husker fans: I've run into one or two morons, but pretty much every one I've met has been friendly and at least halfway intelligent, if not somewhat more arrogant than they deserve to be. That said, I'm hooking up with / dating a really smart Husker girl, so I might be biased.:wink:
