Football is passing bball.
like I said in a preivious post, the training wheels are coming off for everyone on this team. Just from the spring game I saw more muscle and better conditioned players than previous years. This coaching staff and student athletes will get it done and make themselves and us as fans very proud. Go get em cyclones!! by all means get em:yes:
Also, I am very happy and proud of all the coaching staffs here and student athletes that chose to be a cyclone.
Marquis is my favorite Cyclone. And an absolute stud that is overlooked by most fans. Killer attitude over the middle.
Folks, if SDSU scares you, suggest you hang out in the kiddie pool this summer.
No one was more disappointed that Chiz and the Cyclones looked like dog crap against Kent State, UNI, and Toledo last year. But I am 100% confident that most of our struggles were due to new systems ---- which are firmly in place now.
It was four games last year that caused people to buy in, namely, right after the Texas disaster, holding Bradford to one of his worst outings of the year. Who cares if OU acted disinterested in being there, our defense wanted to pull an upset. We then hung right with one of the top teams in the country in Mizzou, and beat a bowl team in Colorado.
Those last 3 home games last year left a pretty good taste in the mouth.
the colorado come back i could feel in my bones after we scored the first TD in the second half. that second half Iowa State team had swagger, and they didnt stop.
Chiziks flip outs get everyone going, i cant remember what game it was, CU or KSU, but i know after chizik was on the field for about 5 min, there was constant booing of refs for about 5 more minutes after he had left the field. you HAVE to love the man.
Thanks 33.
Here is what I am worried about.
#1 QB - Either way we have a new young QB. I think the strength of the O-Line will be key here. I am not sure how good that will be. That is the key to the offense. Any word how the O-Line is shaping up?
#2 Special Teams - We have 2 new kickers. We also need to kick off deep to help the defense out for once.
I don't think people are "scared" of SDSU, but last year we lost to Kent State which finished 1-7 in the MAC. Then we lost to to 1-AA school the next week. That was less than a year ago so its still pretty fresh.
Maybe our MBB coach should take note. The FB team has to play 22 guys and they can get their system pretty much in place in just a little over a year but for some reason with our MBB team, which only has to play 5 guys, the implementation of the "system" is going to take 3-6 years.
Once again, I cannot tell you how important it was that we hired someone in Chizik that had been to the mountain top before...when you are a coordinator at an SEC school and then a Big 12 school and a key reason for TWO back to back undefeated seasons...well, you know what it takes. Johnny Orr is the last coach we hired that came with the kind of credentials that Chizik came with.
Viva la Chizik!!
Here is what I am excited about:
#1 - Having a new QB. Although our last QB certainly appeared to be a nice kid, I am looking forward to seeing someone that progresses rather than regresses at this position.
#2 - Having a new kicker or kickers. This has to be much improved...could it be worse? I think not.
My father-in-law was with me for the OU game. You know, I'm a fairly optimistic guy. Shaggy came out for a field goald, and my father-in-law says to me, "Well, this is about a guarantee. Why do people look so worried?"
I said, "Well, you might be surprised. They're all an adventure this year." He was surprised, right until we missed the kick, and he said, "Oh."
I grew up watching Mark Moseley in the NFL, Haughton in IC and Gillette for Michigan, and thinking that field goal kicks never got missed. I look forward to something like that here someday.
Special teams should not be overlooked. We need improvement in every area. Our kickoffs were terrible last year. Our punt returns were equally bad, either fumbles or designated fair-catches. We had a few short punts and IMO, too many missed FGs. The most sickening experience had to be the Toledo game, where we gave up 17 special teams points in the last 5 minutes: a bad punt snap for a TD, numerous missed tackles on a kickoff return TD, and a blocked FG as time expires.
This year, we'll need to break in replacements for a kick off guy, a field goal kicker, a deep snapper, kickoff returners, and a punt returner; so we'll need a huge amount of practice just to get to where we were last year - which was very bad.
For special teams, two new kickers, among the best in the country...new returner with great credentials, more depth everywhere for more blockers and tacklers. I don't see how we don't improve there. With Blythe returning last year, we basically said we couldn't return a punt...that will change. The one thing I like the most about Chizik...if he sees a screw up, or lack of talent, he addresses it. We needed a FG kicker, he gives 2 schollys, we need a returner, he gets one. He's a quick learn.
Toledo....I haven't seen a game like that since about 8th grade. I want to thank you for reminding me of that. :(
