Re: Criticism of I-State logo
One, you don't cheer for a trucking service.
Two, we have enough differences between us and idaho state (color, logo, mascot, better athletics at the least)
seriously, picking one thing for each and saying that a truck company and idaho state are so recognizable that we can't use something sort-of similar is ridiculous and the writer of that needs to be fired. : ) maybe not fired, but yelled at by their mother, at least.

I love that our mascots don't make sense to outsiders!
I've said before that the fact that our unique heritage doesn't translate easily to branding is not really a concern unless the goal of the athletic program is to sell merchandise. We aren't the NFL: each team with their own font, two colors, and a cute baby animal mascot. The business of pro sports (esp NFL and NASCAR) is really just to provide merchandising and advertising channels.
The fact that most NCAA lore is rooted in esoterica is what makes the NCAA great, and is what makes the fans who are tied to those unique heritages that passionate about their school.
So it doesn't suprise me that a bunch of marketing d-bags don't get it how things work here in 'flyover country'. Maybe if these guys were any good, they be too busy to type a 10,000 word blog on their web page.
I'm certainly too busy to blab on in internet posts every night -- oh wait....

I find that the stencil logos are getting a bit dated. Good logos, but just don't have that snazzy appeal they did when they were new.

We had a simple, classic, identifiable logo. See my avatar.

When we received our nickname the terms were interchangeable. I liked the old tornado on the helmets, and while I love the I-State, I think the 80's tornado without the word "cyclones" above it would have been great.

well, historically when we were named "cyclones" it was interchangeable with tornado. Weather terms have become more defined but you can't fight history.

On top of that, you have the Tigers, Bears and Cowboys that voted against a "cartoon" on their helmet. That leaves only 3 schools that put their mascot/nickname on their helmet: Texas, KSU and Colorado.
I never said it had to be on the helmet, my point was we are the Iowa State Cyclones. Our logo now is I State and I don't see in the new designs and logos where the Cardinal or the Cyclone are included.
He have I with STATE across it.
Re: Criticism of I-State logo
People need to stop caring about what others say. If you like it, great... if not, then I really dont care. If someone cares about our logo or how we are perceived by others more than the actual team or their performance, then screw em! We dont need ya.

How about an elephant for the Crimson Tide, a duck or something for the Hurricanes. Success makes logos and mascots recognizable. The one you are using when making national notoriety is the one that sticks. The logos don't ever change much after a long period of success.

We can do the same with the I State logo.
I like it. I'm glad we didn't do the white helmets, though. The Cardinal looks great.
Mississippi State also lays claim to "State"...come to SEC country and start talking about "State" and you are referencing Miss. St. not Michigan St.

I was there in the mid 80s when we had that logo on the helmets and it reminds me of getting drilled by Iowa every year by about 50, different colored "honor helmets" so our opponent clearly knew which players were our best players, and a bunch of other stuff that I really would like to forget. I like the new logo...but hey, I have liked every logo we have had.

Dude, that is an ibis...a long-legged coastal bird.

On the contrary, the "fighting Cy", for lack of a better name, will still be a large part of our marketing plan. A very good friend of mine works at the University Book Store and told me that the only changes are that there will not ever be any text across or thru the bird itself. It also appears that the logo will incorporate just the cardinal and gold colors now, which I personally like much more.
Re: Criticism of I-State logo
Call me crazy, but I really like the CF Cyclone logo (sans the text, obviously). You could do some minor tweaking and put that on a helmet and it would look pretty sweet, IMO.
