It looked like he had just beaten the animal to death with the bat.
The public response to the logo was so negative that it was abandoned before the team ever played a game. Man, I wish I could find that image somewhere...
Wow, you're right. I didn't think it would be that hard to track down, but either it never made it online in the first place, or they did a darn good job of erasing it. I found one logo from 1993 (their first year), but it's pretty grainy, and I don't think it's the one you're talking about anyway.

Re: Criticism of I-State logo
I honestly wish they would just drop the state and go with just a red or maybe even gold "I" thats how we roll on the lettermen's jackets. I think the Whirlybird without the blue looks a thousand times better and I don't understand why we just don't use that.

The point of arguing the logo design AGAIN is kind of silly, but I will throw my opinion on what I would have done if I were the designed. I agree about the old tornado symbol of the 80s. I liked it. My design would have taken a mix of our new logo and the old 80s tornado. Looking at the new logo, replace the large I in the back with the tornado, and keep the STATE across the front.
For what it's worth, no matter what logo we use, someone wil always be a critic. I just hope we stick with a single logo for a longer time. Frequent logo changes result in a lack of brand recognition.

I think playing off of the tornadic aspects of the Cyclone would have been really good.
In fact, the logo that Jeremy has here, or something like it, would have been a good route to go.
No offense intended for Jeremy, but I think the Cyclone Fanatic logo is terrible. It looks like something between a half tornado and a lighting bolt. The logo has good intentions by incorporating the C and F for cyclone fanatic into the logo and making it look like a 3-D tornado, but the result is not really attractive to me.

I love the logo. What would you draw then?

I agree. I think that some of the best logos are symbols, not letters and not cartoons. Things like the powercat and the tigerhawk and UT's white Bevo on the helmet are immediately recognizable. I wish that they would have gone to some sort of tornado symbol (not a cartoon). BUT, the new logo is fine and really looks distinct. I would have went another direction, but I'm fine with what they've done.
Re: Criticism of I-State logo
I must say I am offended by the logo remarks. I'm damn proud of our logo. Not to sound cocky but I can't for the life of me think of a fansite that has anything even close to the professional looking level of ours.
I'm obviously biased but I love our logo and wouldn't change it for anything.
/End Rant.
Re: Criticism of I-State logo
The logo for Cyclone Fanatic is distinctive, original and clever.
The only original, brand-able, clever logo that ISU has ever had is the wavy 'Clone of the 80's.

'nuff said.
Re: Criticism of I-State logo
I like the 80's logo (In fact, I borrowed the general concept and shape in making new shirts this last year), however as some have pointed out it's associated with some bad times for our program, so it'd be a hard sell.
The point where I started to see any decency to the I-State logo (I hate I-State by the way... ISU or Iowa State. I-State doesn't roll off like K-State does...) was when I saw it on a polo shirt in the book store. Looks great on polos... still not convienced about it on the field, or it replacing the Whirly Bird holding "ISU" out on the front of Jack Trice, or some of the other prominant replacements it's being implimented for
Re: Criticism of I-State logo
What influences my negative reaction towards our new "I-State" comes from the disappointing "final three" that it was picked from. After all the waiting and anticipation, it was deflating. No imagination at all, all just letters or words, and no new symbols or caricatures. It's as if they drew something up in ten minutes to get three "finalists."
