[quote=djkent01;555233]You can dismiss history as much as you want, but the fact of the matter is that history and tradition is EXACTLY what Chizik faces. Those of us that have been around long enough to witness these things, and that still believe, are going to enjoy the sweet succss that's coming to us FAR more than the newcomers.
Thank you , I will.
Also, what Chizik "faces" is the same as every other D-I coach. It's the same thing Dan Hawkins faced when he took over BSU. The same thing Urban Meyer faced when he took over Utah. The same thing Bill Snyder faced when he took over K-State. They all face competition for recruits and quality assistants.
From now on when Gene sits in that living room in Oklahoma and dad brings up the Sooners, Gene will probably bring up the 2007 game and say, "With your son on the team we can start finishing the job." He sure as hell isn't going to bring up that meaningless winning percentage.
I say meaningless because to the great football programs which appear the lopsided list like Michigan and Oklahoma it is. They know that tradition is great but if it leads to complacency it means nothing. As I alluded to in my first post; if tradition were the central factor in carrying a football program Yale and Army would still be winning national championships. Every year the players on the field have to prove it. It's true that tradition brings more donors and more attention but that tradition evaporates at kickoff when there is a football team on the other side that knows they can beat you. App. St. was that team for Michigan and BSU was that team for Oklahoma.
And WE will be that team for the Big XII.
