when did we switch from the flat red paint on the tazmanian cy helmets to the more metallic sparkly red paint? Anyone remember the year? Was there another red used with taz cy helmets or just those two?
I think the year it changed from the flat red to the sparkled red was 2003. Cannot back that up, but it seems right. I think uniform changes are a bad omen and that year was real bad. The flat red was the only real part of the old helmet I liked really IMHO. Hopefully this years uniform change puts to rest my belief that bad things happen when a school changes up.

2003 is the year. The same year we went to the new style of uniforms, and the same year Austin Flynn quarterbacked us to a horrible season.
I believe you mean 2003 was the beginning of the end of respectable Iowa State Offensive Lines and when our Quarterbacks had to start running for their lives on every down.

I would put it that way too . I think Flynn never got a great shot, but it ended up ok and he gave us a nice career.

Seems like there was a year in the mid-80's with a blank yellow helmet. Anyone remember that? Anyway, I was thinking there was either a year where we had blue face masks and metallic red helmets or white face masks and flat red helmets, like a transition year. Maybe I am wrong.

The year we went to all red unis with the gold numbers and trim was the year we won the Insight.com Bowl. I remember because I wasn't sold on the look until they took the field at the BOB. Then the next year I think they ruined the look by replacing the gold trim with white. Didn't look near as cool. Have no idea why they did that.

1986 - don't actually remember those days as I was young and stupid and didn't know any better and cheered for the Hawks - but that blank gold helmet is right there on my desktop.

The uniforms went into the dumpster following 1994/95...whenever we abandoned the cardinal and gold.
It has been a long time....but we finally look (at least) like a real football team this year.
Looking at that helmet selection photo, I'd say ISU abandoned the true cardinal & gold colors back in 1983. Has been "ketchup & mustard" until this season...

looks like you may be right...I was blinded by my horror of the whirley butt' logo perhaps.
