I googled this several years ago....it's something from the old Dick Tracy cartoon/TV show. Still not sure what it means, but that's where it comes from.

also seen a reference to a Bogart movie. Marty Tirrell always uses this phrase and it gets old. Thanks

Apparently, some old Boston Red Sox manager used to use the phrase....since Marty is from that area, maybe that's where he picked it up. (see the link below)

Marty has stated that its not the Dick Tracy reference. That its some odd ball thing that almost no one would know about, or probably care. They used to take calls on about what it meant. Dont think he ever said.

Re: 6, 2 and even

"I used to hear that in my youth while growing up in Brooklyn, NY in the old time pool halls from the bookies.

The phrase refers to a horse that starts out the day with average type odds:
6-1 to win
2-1 to place
Even money to show.
6, 2 and even.
Before placing a bet a horseplayer can see the odds on the tote board and then determine if those odds represent good wagering value." Many tracks will start the odds on horses close to the above examples and can be interpreted that the horses close to those odds are not out of the ordinary. Eventually the phrase meant that all was well and A-OK and everything is close to normal."

That's gotta be it, since Marty loves him some horse-racing.

This is the sarcasm pirate. If you see him anywhere in my post, it means I was being sarcastic. Thank you. Actually there's a good chance I'm being sarcastic even if I forgot the pirate. I'm not to be taken too seriously.

John Buccigross on sportscenter also uses this phrase quite a bit, and most of the time is referring to Red Sox or Patriots stuff, good thread, I have always been curious my self!
