Well I guess I don't have a life. Out of curiosity I decided to sit down and calculate Arnaud and Bates stats based from the highly accurate (sarcasm) scrimmage reports on the Cyclone website. Though I know that these numbers are not accurate, it does appear that Bates is doing better in the first four scrimmages. One thing I wish I could have added was interceptions, but oddly enough, they don't include those.
Well take it for what it's worth, we'll see for ourselves in 10 days.
I think Bates has out done Arnaud there as well. They don't give very good stats on attempts, they are too inconsistent. I guess I could of included rushing stats, but I need to leave something for someone else to do.

Ahh...except if you read the defensive highlights, you'll find many deflected balls, broken up passes, and an interception or two. Heck Jerrod Black (D-Line) had a pick in the 2nd scrimmage.

So 2 definite interceptions, 1 ruled out of bounds, and several tipped balls, about 1/2 of which were at the line of scrimmage. I'm glad to see the DBs and LBs (especially the young guys) putting pressure on the QB and making some noise. It looks like there haven't been too many picks, which is definitely a good thing. Batted balls aren't good either, but better than a pick.
I'm in the boat that we shouldn't read too much into these practice reports, but they are fun to look at for a general idea of where we stand. I do get a kick out of everyone who says "they don't post the negative stuff"---If the D has a highlight, it's generally a negative for the O, and a highlight for the O is a negative for the D. I'd be impressed to see a practice report with ALL positives. Sometimes you just have to read a little deeper into things. (Not a personal attack against anyone, just something I've noticed.)
Tipped balls and near interceptions are not normally included in a stat report and since they market it as a defense highlight, it is usually hard to determine which QB made the throw/ or receiver that failed to make the catch. That is why I didn't include it. If people what to get the full effect then they can go to the website and read the report. Even though my stats don't support it, I actually think that Arnaud is better, but we will see.
My gut tells me that this staff likes the upside of Bates more then Arnaud - however, given the experience and offensive knowledge factor, the staff went into spring figuring Arnaud would get the early nod. But Bates appears to have surprised in that regard - learning the offense, making good decisions, and having the ability to throw the long ball.
You can all preach about not reading too much into the practice and scrimmage information being posted, but the one thing that strikes me is that Bates has had a lot of long touchdown passes and is also hitting a high percentage of his passes. If the concensus opinion is correct and Bates is the more skilled and explosive runner, I have to believe he's going to be the main guy before Big 12 play starts. But I still think both will play extensively.

I believe Bates has the ability to make more plays on the field -- esp. with his legs. It'll be VERY interesting to see how much time the #2 QB gets against SDSU in a week & a half...
This fight is interesting and all, but one thought I jjust had - and it may have been hashed out before, forgive me if it has.
Both Bates and Arnaud were recruited fairly heavily out of highschool. I think both had serveral offers, from in the B12 and outside of the conference.
If I recall correctly all of Arnuad's offers were at the QB position. The only QB offer for Bates (again I may be wrong) I think was ISU which is why he is a Cyclone and not a Husker.
Did all the other schools involved miss the boat on Bates being a big conference DI quality QB or has he developed further, or is Arnaud really not that good?
It just seems to me there is a question rolling around in there somewhere about the QB at ISU right now.
I was at the scrimmage Sat. and both looked very impressive. They are very different in their styles and abilities. Bates is lightning quick, and Arnaud throws a beautiful, laser-like pass. From what I saw on sat, I think Chz & co. might use both for all year. Also, Tiller will be stud in the future.

Bates appears to be a "playmaker" in the truest sense of the word. One way or another, a good coach will strive to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers as much as he can. I expect to see Bates on the field a lot (both at QB and elsewhere).
I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I believe Bates did not fit the profile for 'upper echelon' (sp?) programs in that his is listed at 6'1" - so he's probably stretching to actually be 6'0". I could be wrong if Chiz and the Crew are putting their actual weight and height on the roster, but even if true, at 6'1", Bates doesn't fit the 'height' profile for the 4 to 5 star QB.
Now I know it shouldn't matter and there are examples all over the place proving this wrong (Seneca, Chase @ Mizzou, Reesing @ KU, etc, etc), but how do you think these guys got to the place they are at to play QB? It's because of the stringent standards for prototype QBs. Well, IMO anyways, and its fine, too. I'll take all the Seneca's and Bates' the country has to offer!
I wish there was a "I don't know" selection. honestly, without being there, it's really hard to say, even with stats. Who was on the field against them at the time? Are the exact same plays being called each time. Is it always the same players on offense for each QB? For me, I'm keeping an open mind. I really have faith that the guy who should be on the field will be there on the 28th. I guess I just don't want to think (or hear) "Bates (or AA) should have been in there if the first Offensive series tanks.
