Re: pre-game cheers

Yep, Jeff is a really great guy. I've met him in person a couple of times and he's just great to be around; however, this role is not a good fit for him especially as he yells into a mic (never a great idea).

Would anyone else be a better fit or should ISU get rid of it altogether?

I do not get this at all. JP always talks about how he wants ISU to have a great game day experience for the fans. He has go to know that 99% of ISU fans hate this. It is so lame and embarassing.

Here is the solution.

Everyone get in the stadium 1/2 hour early and start the cheers before he takes the field.

problem solved.

BINGO!!!

I don't like it either, it makes us all look stupid. But it is also pretty stupid how bad we are at getting into the "pre-kickoff" festivities. To stop this from happeneing we need to be proactive and do it ourselves. Make it so there is no need for him to lead.

Re: pre-game cheers

I dont have a problem with the cheers...I just have a problem with Jeff Johnson leading the cheers. Let a cute little cheerleader get behind the mic or one of the dude cheerleaders.

We've tried that... unfortuantly the West side of the stadium is a bunch of deaf mutes that sit on their hands while the student section on the East side goes hoarse trying to get them to join them in a cheer

(yeah, I went there this early in the season )

Seriously though... leave it to the student section... we start cheers there all the time. Yes Jeff gets a higher participation rate because he's harder to ignore, but atleast hand it to a cheerleader (for the next few years until the concept takes hold...)

This is something that needs to be phased out if we are to be taken seriously. Texas does a better job of doing pregame cheers, and it's completely spontaneous... the rest of the crowd follows whoever starts a cheer (usually the student section but either way)

It'd be nice to see the whole stadium participate in cheers without a guy yelling into a microphone to get them to do it.

It'd be even nicer to see those cheers origionate from the West side from time to time too

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!

Re: pre-game cheers

Agreed, it needs to go and go soon. He's been doing this for what, at least 3 seasons now? I think we have the cyclone power cheer and the ISU cheer figured out now. It was what needed to be done to try and get it started, but if it can't survive on its own at this point then it just isn't going to happen. At this point I find it so embarassing that our fans have to be arm twisted into cheering at a football game that I would rather not be in the stadium for pre-game so I don't have to be part of the whole debacle. Let the band and the cheerleaders work the student section to get things started, I'm pretty sure it will work, and it won't make it look like our fanbase doesn't give a rip about football.

Re: pre-game cheers

I've met JJ before, love his attitude and enthusiasm but the way he does the cheers just gets annoying. His raspy voice is probably a big part of that but the Cy-cl-on-es Cyclones Cyclones Go State! cheer was by far the dumbest one of them all and glad that went away last year. I like the idea of the students leading it if they can find a way to get that to work.

And yes, please ditch Sweet Caroline as well!

Or just have the cheerleaders leave their signs where crazy students who are bored from being at the stadium atleast a half hour before the gates open can get to them...

Re: pre-game cheers

A&M has cheer practice for it's students the night before games and the rest of the crowd follows suit, if we tried something like this I would see about 10 sober people in the crowd.

As for the current cheers, I don't think the west side of JT will ever get into the cheering, I just don't see it happening.

I would have loved to have cheer practice like I hear A&M does... best we've managed in the last few years is a half *** pep rally after an open pratice in which Jeff Johnson taught us CY-CL-ON-ES...

At least not until the old ones die off. True

Word. Don't forget the 4th quarter with ten minutes to go, even when we ARE winning.

Re: pre-game cheers

Does ISU still have Yell Like Hell around homecoming? Something like that but year-round wouldn't be too bad. Even have a weekly contest or something and the winners get to lead the cheers before the next home game?
