I see they don't have any stars from Rivals or Scout I believe. Have they not been evaluated or are they just zero stars?

From the way it appears that the coaches recruited in their first season.... you wont see any complaints from me.

Smells like another good question for Gene next Monday. Interesting topic.
Hulbert was backup at LT all last season, iirc (at least he was listed that way on the weekly depth charts, I believe). So, one would assume he's got LT athleticism.
And Hayworth, at 6-3 and 335 pounds, is there this fall, behind Dedrick. Anyone here focus a bit on him Thursday night? You'd think he must be athletic to work that position at that size.
Looks like in 2009 we'll have two juniors capable of playing LT, maybe (Hayworth and Hulbert). Carpenter would make three juniors. Maybe he's good enough that more line shuffling will be considered to the get the best five out there.
And, maybe there's a youngster or two who is capable of LT play who we don't know about yet. Like Haughton, the backup for Hulbert at RT. The staff seemed sincerely crazy about his abilities (you'd think he'd have to be darn athletic to play on the line as a first-year freshman, and he played Thursday night, I think.)
Yeah, good question for Gene, good chance for us to learn more about this. . . .

If Carpenter is better than either in the 2 deep.. get him and let the other kids ride the pine.

There are some really good posts in this thread. I think I'm running out of rep.
Two thoughts about these guys:
1. Both are at positions where immediate depth next season is a serious issue. Strongside end graduates Taylor, Frere and Ferguson. That leaves only redshirting Cleyon Laing. Safety is practically stripped, with only ustin Land and upperclassmen (mostly seniors) returning. Cornerback looked like this last season, and look at what Chizik did with the '08 class. I think we'll see more commits at both positions.
Left tackle is my other immediate concern--Hicks and Haighton might be able to play the position, but both are 6-3, more like guards. And not to slam Hulbert...but I don't think he's the quickest guy in the world for pass protection. I'd love to have Carpenter. And Money Reynolds would be pure gravy. Originally Posted by ajk4st8 If Carpenter is better than either in the 2 deep.. get him and let the other kids ride the pine. Exactly. The coaches are the ones who know.
Let's let them seal up those "immediate need" spots (which means a better team next season), then fill out the class with the best athletes possible everywhere else.
2. Juco recruiting for Rivals and Scout is hardly completed (let alone thorough), but obviously the coaches saw something on film they liked in these two guys. They may be anonymous at the moment, but that hardly means they'll remain so. As far as Butler especially, is concerned, remember that the last juco defensive back they signed was Kennard Banks. | | |

Carpenter is good enough to play in the NFL in a few years and I'll be bold and say he would immediately come in and start for ISU next season.

A collegiate football coach's job should be, in regards to recruiting, is to always try to recruit over the current talent you have. Yup, sometimes feelings/egos will get hurt. But how can you expect to get better if you're not tirelessly working at getting better talent?
I see our staff doing this and expecting it to pay off for us!

I'd say we have a recruiting Gene-ius on hand. Look at the underclassmen in our 2 deeps; with no behavioral problems. What ever he's doing is working.

It's also nice to have 30-35% of the class the first week of Sept. Hoping they all keep their verbal and more join the party!
