So I don't see ISU having the "advantage" that many other dual-headed systems have. Our advantage would be having a fresh guy in there and if one guy is having an off day, the other guy gets the reps.[/quote]
This is one thing I get concerned about is replacing a QB every time he starts to struggle. That can be a little hard on the confidence and doesn't allow the person to work their way through what ever problems might be. It's the Dr Tom Davis school of coaching mentality.
The other thing is bates was so impressive with his feet I think we need him on the field all the time whether it is QB or another position.
I don't know about everyone else but I didn't think we looked all that quick against SDSU, and thats a little sad. I think we need to keep all the quickness and speed we have on the field as much as possible.

Who is getting replaced? It's not like McFarland is putting in the backup - he's not. The guy with the hot hand will play more. That happens in every other team sport at every position.

mostly just want Bates on the field most of the time whether that is at QB or another position. he was our second or third leading rusher and he played 25% of the game. i don't just want him in there when AA is not playing well.

So say we put Bates at WR, then what happens when Bates and Arnaud get hurt in the same game?
It is the safest and smartest thing to keep both of them at QB. I understand that Bates has special athletic ability, but if either one of them go down, we need the other healthy and ready to lead the team.

What would lead you to believe Bates would play only if AA isn't playing well? 'Cuz again, based on Thursday night - that's not what is going to happen. lets say that bates was WR, I don't think he would be the back QB anymore. he would probably be 3rd string. What would have happened if Austen Flynn would have gotten hurt the same time as Bret Meyer?

Bates has already said repeatedly that he is only playing QB. He is not going to play WR. The best thing to do right now is to let them battle it out. Let the best QB win.

Leak and Tebow only had to do it for one year. Both of our guys are still sophomores...

You're at odds with both Chizik and McFarland, then.
AA is the starter at the moment.
In recent days Chizik has said that Bates is a quarterback. Period. Chizik said Bates will not play another position this fall.
IMHO, many here are regarding AA's athletic ability too lightly. He can run -- someone else here pointed out that AA was sprinting virtually stride-for-stride with Jason Harris on his long TD run Thursday night. They were movin'.
Many of us, I think, based on evidence so far believe that AA's passing arm is superior to Phillip's. In other words, AA's arm can take better advantage of Sid, Darius, Collin, Derrick, Marquis and RJ's receiving abilities.
Extrapolating from that, AA appears to be the better solution for putting a balanced passing-rushing offense on the field, given the depth at running back we have.
Last season, Chizik said that the no. 1 quality the staff looks for when recruiting a QB is his ability to escape, to make things happen when a play breaks down, to get out of trouble. AA must be decent at that, since he's starting.
Overall, a good number of us believe that AA is the superior quarterback right now. Guess we stand on the side of the gods, since the staff says the best player plays. Period. And, AA right now is the starter.
AA can become an outstanding quarterback, it appears he has all the tools a quarterback needs to succeed big. Maybe Phillip does, too. We'll see. . . .
