Pssst. Running backs are a huge part of the passing game. Both via blocking and catching.
That's how football is played.
I remember what a huge hit it was losing Stevie Hicks in '05 and playing Greg Coleman. It wasn't because there was a huge gap in running ability, it was because Hicks could block like a line man, and without him, Meyer took a lot more pressure...

If ARob is down for awhile, is there anyway we pull the redshirt off of Schwartz? I wouldn't think the staff would want to, but if we don't get any production out of Bass or Scales we might have too.
Isn't Schwartz hurt?
Honestly, Scales is one of my favorite 'clones. He came to ISU highly touted, but never let it go to his head. He's worked his butt off through tons of injuries, and hasn't complained a bit. He does the dirty work that a lot of RB's wouldn't be bothered to do. We are a better team with him than without him.
Yeah he's not the most electric rusher. He might not have the speed or agility to be what we all want to see in a back running the ball, but he brings as much to the offense as pretty much anyone else on the O.

WHY Jason Scales is the starting RB is beyond me. last night he was 19 carries for 36 yards....1.8 avg. It was some of the WORST running I have ever seen. He runs right into the line and falls down.
If he starts next week, ISU looses by 20. Jason Harris last week had a 70 yd td run and does not sniff the field last night. However Mr. Scales gets 19 carries with his LONGEST run of 5 yards (which I am trying to remember).
Keep him on the special teams blocking punts, but get him out of the rotation for running back. I know I am just a fan and not paid to be a coach, but he has done nothing to deserve his current role.
What is worse, 19 carries with only 36 yards, or a couple sacks? I think the extra yardage we might get with someone else running the ball outweighs the loss of a few sacks.
You are going under the assumption that another back would've consistently done better than him. If I figure right, Bass was under 3 YPC. So lets say we give up a couple of sacks for a total of 25 yards...that may break us even at best but also puts us in 2 long yardage holes that we wouldn't have been in.
This team is about not effing up. May not be the greatest players but when you eliminate mistakes, you have a better chance to win...
