19 for 36

WHY Jason Scales is the starting RB is beyond me. last night he was 19 carries for 36 yards....1.8 avg. It was some of the WORST running I have ever seen. He runs right into the line and falls down.

If he starts next week, ISU looses by 20. Jason Harris last week had a 70 yd td run and does not sniff the field last night. However Mr. Scales gets 19 carries with his LONGEST run of 5 yards (which I am trying to remember).

Keep him on the special teams blocking punts, but get him out of the rotation for running back. I know I am just a fan and not paid to be a coach, but he has done nothing to deserve his current role.

Hopefully, A-Rob will be healthy enough to start against EIU.

I thought it was fairly evident why he started. Robinson was injured. Bass was in his first game back from the doghouse--as well as missing a lot of practices. Jason is a seasoned, solid, steady senior--on a very young offense. Perhaps most importantly, he blocks well.

Please, feel free to stop bashing a Cyclone who is playing his heart out, and leaving it all on the field.

People will tell you Scales is great in pass protection and that's a big reason he starts. He's clearly not a great runner but he made a few plays last night and we won. ARob is the guy, though.

I am glad that he is a good pass rusher. If that is the case than put him in only in obvious passing situations like 3rd and long. Otherwise he shouldn't play. Period. And it pains me to say this b/c he plays hard and has a ton of injuries. But under 2 YPC against a MAC team says more than I ever could about his game

Pass blocking is correct. Base and Harris are not the greatest pass blockers.

What Drive4cy said, Scales is great with pass protection. The coaching staff probably felt that they'd pass the ball to get ahead, and sit on the ball a little once that lead surfaced. The offense did absolutely nothing to lose the game for us last night... it's the defense that couldn't get a hold on Kent State's two decent players.

Honestly, it's a win, and it was never really nail-bitingly close once it got going. How often have we seen that? People are reacting like this is the same team from last year and 2006, when it's clearly not. They're going to do great things.

Rather than bashing one of our players, talk about where we need to improve and how getting ARob back could help that. There is no need to call a specifric player out by name. We are not Hawkeyes, we are better than that.

No reason to telegraph a play, after all.

No, if Bass were up to speed, if Robinson were healthy, you would have seen less of Jason. But we don't only pass on third and long, and those two aren't. I also think that you're ignoring the offensive line's contribution to that ineffectiveness. He did rush for a hundred yards in a conference game last season, after all.

It's one game. It's in the past. We won. No ******** and moaning required.

Agreed! We win, yet we complain about one of our best blocking running backs who didn't have a decent hole to run through last night. Who by the way would of had a touch down pass if it were not overthrown. I'll go out on a limb and bet the coaches know more about football than we do? Just guessing...

People quickly forget just how horrid we were last season, especially early. Improvements continue to be made - enjoy them!

Why does all of the blame have to be placed on Scales? I'm by no means a football expert, but I would argue that the overall effectiveness of a team's running game has more to do with the OL than with the individual running back. You're not going to gain many yards if you don't have much room to run.

I wasn't at the game yesterday so can't really comment on the specifics of the game (at least until I can watch the replay on Clone Zone). But it sounded like (at least according to Walters & Heft) Kent State spent most of the second half run blitzing and overwhelming our offensive front. If that's the case, should we really expect Scales to be ripping off huge chunks of yardage? Don't get me wrong, I'm concerned about the effectiveness of our running game as well. But I think there are a number of factors at work here, not just the "suckiness" of Jason Scales.

Classy post bud. You're right, you're not paid to be a coach and it's a good thing you aren't because you'd be unemployed very quickly.

As long as you're calling individuals out, why don't you call out the O linemen for not creating any holes for Scales to run through? Yes, Scales did not have a great night running the ball. But don't you think it might have been due to the fact that there were very few holes to run through, or that he was called upon to run the ball in obvious running situations (when we're trying to run the clock throughout the 4th quarter) so Kent State sold out and stuffed the box with extra defenders?

In a large sense, Scales took one for the team last night, but I'm not sure you're even familiar with that concept. There are a lot of posters on the Hawkeye boards who have the same problem.
