Re: Rain in the forecast for Saturday
Never win games abandoning the run? Texas Tech and many other teams disagree with you.
However, you have a much better chance to win if you run the ball effectively. I don't see us doing that Saturday - rain or shine.
IMO, our chances are better to win if we pass, pass, pass and use that to setup a few runs.

Re: Rain in the forecast for Saturday
Come on we don't have the QB that Texas Tech does that allows them to pass 50 times a game.

Re: Rain in the forecast for Saturday
I never said we did. :) Just commented on your absolute post.
We don't know between our 2 QBs, if we could throw it 35-50 times in a game and be effective or not. I doubt we're going to win running the ball, unless something significantly changes between now and Saturday.
So we may as well find out, go down swinging if that's what happens - instead of going down without a fight.

Texas Tech doesn't produce great QBs - good QBs thrive in that kind of system. Put either Arnaud or Bates into that kind of system and they're probably just as good as the guy they currently have in there.

Re: Rain in the forecast for Saturday
Isn't that something we should have tried out over the past 2 games instead of just giving it a whirl against our biggest rival. We ran the ball quite well against SDSU.

You honestly think that if Arnaud was playing for TT this year that he would be a Heisman candidate? Thats what Harrell is for them this year. Thats a bold statement and I one that I really don't agree with.

Plus, we saw some 3 and 4 wide sets against SDSU - didn't get to the Kent State game to say one way or the other.
There's something to be said for not putting all your cards on the table until you get to games in which you need the Aces and Joker.
And, 41 carries for 161 yards (3.9/carry) is hardly what I'd call running the ball "quite well", especially when considering it was against SDSU.
Yes, I didn't include the 68 yard run from Harris, only because it came in garbage time.

Re: Rain in the forecast for Saturday
Fair enough. I just think the Iowa game isn't the best time to be trying out this run n' gun offense that seems like most of you want to do. I don't know if there is a game I would try it out. Thats why the Kent State would have been a good time to throw the ball 40 times especially since Scales and Bass couldn't run the ball at all. For some reason we kept giving the ball to Scales when he obviously couldn't be effective enough.

We moved the ball at will in the passing game and IMO had it ever really gotten that close in the 2nd half we would have stepped on the accelerator.

And as I said, we did it some in the first game...just very limited and vanilla.
Why throw the ball 40 times if you didn't need to do it? We clearly didn't need to throw it that many times to win Saturday -- so no sense in doing it.
Sounds like our backs and offensive line were equally as ineffective. I think that will carry over to next weekend - which is why I believe we'll see a much more open passing playbook. It's not something I want, especially with what I consider to be a good group of running backs. Yet if we can run the ball well vs. Kent State, I doubt we will against Iowa.
But their secondary is inexperienced enough to make me believe we can and should have success against them via the air.
