The o-line was opening holes, but it seemed to take AR a long time to get to/choose the hole. I don't recall hearing King's or Krull's names called much. Obviously our special teams let us down today. A true freshman kicker, from Iowa, playing in his first road game in a huge rivalry game. . . That's a tough spot for him. But he'll get better for it. The whole team will get better for it in the long run. I agree that we have better athletes than we've ever had, but they are ALL freshmen and sophmores right now. I actually think the line played real good, considering the field conditions I'd say they played excellent. You can't expect a RB that isn't 100% to run wild on a drown field. And as far as the kicking game went, not his fault at all. He's young, first road game ever was at Iowa, field conditions were horrid and the snaps didn't help at all. We'll be fine, GO STATE!!!!

But can't it be said that Iowa left 14 or more points on the field as well???? Just get over this game and move onto UNLV. Don't let the Hawks beat us twice

Re: ISU @ Iowa - post-game thread
(Re-typing an entire post as my reply did not go through due to thread merge while typing the original post)
besser, your post made me go look up the stats as I had not done so until now....and WOW.
Total Yards ISU - 325 Iowa - 244
First Downs ISU - 18 Iowa - 11
Passing Yards ISU - 252 Iowa - 122 (wow, bad)
Rushing Yards ISU - 73 Iowa - 122
Penalties were pretty close to even, and our third down conversion inefficiency was worse that Iowa's but not by a huge margin. We were -1 in turnovers but that isn't too bad considering field conditions and the hostile environment.
We moved the ball well, just couldn't punch it in to the end zone. Makes losses like this very tough to swallow.

Re: ISU @ Iowa - post-game thread
The teamse played dead even most of the entire game.
Our special teams choked and theirs didn't have to.
That to me was the entire story of the game.
3-3 in the fourth quarter with us out playing them to that point.

Re: ISU @ Iowa - post-game thread
There's been a lot of criticism of the coaching staff in this now merged thread. Food for thought and in defense of the staff.
A very young and inexperienced team in transition. Coaching staff having to build the playbook in layers. My sense is that the staff built the playbook to start opening up with this game with what they wanted to use against Iowa. Then we had the incredibly sloppy field. The plays that were practiced were no longer good options in those conditions - so the staff had to revert back to what we ran against SDSU and KSU. You can only adapt to and use what you practice.
In another year or so, the players will be more experienced and the total playbook will be implemented. But we just didn't have anything in place to adjust to that will spread the defense more inside the red zone. I think that's why the play calling was slow - the staff was desperately trying to find something that could work against the Iowa defense down there.
I think it probably impacted the players too - I'm sure many of them hoped this would be a breakout week for a lot of things - but the sloppy field forced elimination of much of an already small playbook. Which makes next week key - we really need success at UNLV, and I think ISU will light it up.

Sure they are adding in plays slowly but and there maybe playes they couldnt use but they should have had plays on a sheet to use in the rain and slop.

A playbook for a young team in transition isn't built in a week. They've been working on this since spring camp started - and not with the freshmen until fall camp. Not to mention, nobody expected the field conditions to be anywhere near as bad as they were.

Whatever else you might claim, you certainly can't fault desire. According to a post on Cyclone Report, Iowa has a younger team than we do. Is this true? They just have no QB and we have 2 good one's.

Congrats that your program, in its tenth year, can beat a young, rebuilding ISU team at home with the benefit of a complete BS call.
Enjoy it for one year.</B> I'm so glad that our veteran team consisting of (starters) 7 srs, 4 jrs, 10 sophs, & 1 fr could get the victory over your young rebuilding squad of 8 srs, 8 jrs, 6 sophs & 0 fr. .............. Wait a minute...... who has the younger team???

Re: ISU @ Iowa - post-game thread
I guess I'll give my game day experience here..
Parked at CoralRidge Mall and took the train. That was fantastic. Back in Ames by 5:00.
I got made fun of a couple of times when I got up and cheered loudly and it turned out to be a good play for Iowa. One was Shonn Green's long run down the left sideline. I was watching through my bicoculars and saw two guys had him totally wrapped up and the other was seeing Collin Franklin make a TD catch and I didn't see it dropped. I was trying to high-five people and they just looked at me like I was a dumb***!! The Hawks around me had a good laugh at my expense. I guess you not only have to play to the whistle, you have to watch to the whistle too!! We were in the north end zone a few rows above the ISU band and there were a several friendlies there which made it a lot nicer.
I honestly thought we were going to win as we entered the fourth quarter but things went south. I'm still very optimistic that we can get to six wins. As far as getting the play off on time, I only remember a couple of times that was an issue but maybe it was worse than I remember. I think we had a penalty and then still didn't get a play off and had to waste a time out that made it look really bad.
Let's get UNLV and be 3-1 heading into conference play!!

well it was nice of the hawks to take that safety at the end so we could cover the spread.

And just like that, thousands and thousands of dollars were lost and won on that one simple step. -

Re: ISU @ Iowa - post-game thread
plain and simple you cannot make ANY, not ANY excuses if you are an ISU fan... we beat ourselves. yes iowa beat us fair and square, so if you are an iowa fan dont get mad me, but if these two teams played each other ten times, i would guess it would turn out to be about 5-5. ISU had a crappy game and did not bring their all.
So far this season ISU has, for the most part, stayed away from the stupid mistakes. And yesterday the cyclones made up for it. They played awful in the red zone and don't even ask me about the FG kicker... makes me miss shaggy very much.
Bottom line is no excuses, not one. ISU beat themselves and did not deserve to win.
