As would I. Ya don't redshirt a guy like Bates midway through is collegiate career.

Re: Arnaud/Bates..strengths-weakness
It's a dangerous thing having a safety back there with a quarterback's mind. Dangerous for the other team, that is. :)
I would hope that if it's clear Arnaud is the better guy, Bates would make a move that would not only better the team - but himself. Same for the other way, should Bates progress and distance himself. If Bates did make a move to defense, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him still used on offense in some cases.
But I'm getting a head of myself here - as the race has yet to be decided. But there is clearly a leader at this point, that much is obvious.

I don't know what to do about them, but honestly to this point neither one has really blown me away. I think we'll see them both as long as we need to.

Re: Arnaud/Bates..strengths-weakness
McFarland on Cotler said there were three reasons for the trouble getting plays in.
1) Arnaud had mud all over his wristband and couldn't clean it enough to read the play.
2) McFarland just took to long getting the play in.
3) They couldn't get the correct personnel groups in the game in time.

We need both of these guys on the field as much as possible.

Re: Arnaud/Bates..strengths-weakness
I think you'd be hard pressed convincing a sophomore to readshirt before his junior year. I mean I can't think of a single time that has happened. Frankly I would imagine a transfer would be likely if they were trying to push him to redshirt as a junior.

Forcing/suggesting a redshirt like that would really give incentive to a guy for a transfer.

Re: Arnaud/Bates..strengths-weakness
Chizik was pretty forceful yesterday, as he has been on this topic consistently. "Bates is a QB".
I think we're going to see a lot more of Bates Saturday on that fast track, and I think he's going to break a couple of long ones.

Re: Arnaud/Bates..strengths-weakness
I think it is clear that Bates and Arnaud are 2 of our top 5 players on offense. At a school like ISU, you simply have to play them both. That means Bates at WR and Arnaud at QB. Bates at safety makes some sense too, but I have the feeling getting him to play WR would be an easier sale.

Kansas has been in the same situation and they haven't hesitated at all to play Kerry Meier, in fact he has 10 more receptions than anyone else on the team.
