I was having a discussion with one of my Nebraska friends over the weekend and he argued that we are the worst team in the history of either conference and it's not even close.
I argued with him for a bit and realized that many of the accomplishments I was touting were individual and not team.
Holy crap. Is he right? I started thinking of the schools we've been historically better than or at least on par with.
Texas--No
Oklahoma--No
Nebraska--No
Colorado--No
OK State--No
A&M--No
Texas Tech--No
Kansas--No
K State--No
Mizzou--No
Baylor---??
He says no and that Baylor won their conference a couple times right before joining the Big 12.
Is he wrong? I'd like to believe that he is, but other than Baylor, I can't see how we're even close to the accomplishments of the teams other than Baylor.
Maybe you've all realized this, but I had never really thought of it this way. It's pretty sobering.

How many did they have for their spring game? More than we'll get for a real game all year.

I don't have any numbers to back this up, but if you take the entire history of the Big 6/8, I'd have to think our record is better than K-State. They stunk for a long time.
Again, no quantitative data to back me up but our 2000-2005 success has to put us above Baylor.
We're not the worst IMO, but not by much.

When our best game ever consists of Marv Seiler running so slow the Nebraska defense was diving in front of him anticipating he would be there to make a tackle. That is probably not the highlight that would put us in the top half of anything.
Basically what I am saying is our best game ever we outslowed the competition so much they were confused.

Damn.
I must be living in some sort of dreamland.
Damn. That's just a kick in the onions. Until he took me team by team, I didn't realize it.
He was actually pretty nice about it and said it so matter of factly (?) as if the whole world knew this. |

Looking strictly at the history of the Big 12 since it was formed, I think you can make a case for Baylor being worse than us. Of course part of the reason Baylor has had so little success is because they have to play every team in the South every year whereas we only have to deal with three in any given year.
We probably are the worst in the history of the Big 12 North. I might not have argued this a couple of years ago, but Kansas & Missouri's recent success changed things.
As for the Big 8, I'm not really old enough to know much about our history there.
It's an unfortunate truth that we've been bad historically, but that doesn't mean it can't change.

We're not the worst IMO, but not by much. Our discussion was based somewhat on accomplishments and KState has clearly accomplished more than us.

We have a better record in the Big 8 than K-State, and only a little bit worse than KU. Here is the all-time Big 8 conference records for Big 8 teams (from 1913-1994). Here is the all-time Big 12 record. I'd say we are safely better than Baylor.

Why do you think the Squawks always say we are irrelivant? Pretty much because we are until we prove otherwise.

If this is for football only, then yes. We are the worst. Unfortunate, but true.
