As much money as the property owner has put into that place (and is losing), Zmolek may be able to get the space back. You never see very many people in there. I don't know of any other spaces that Peoples would want...unless they were to buy the old DL/Reign/Outlaws. I saw that was for sale.

Outlaws is for sale?!? Where am I gonna get my line dance on!?

Buying the fire station building was the original plan, but that fell through quickly. Also heard rumors of if that happened, that block of Welch would be turned into a Ped Mall.

The new bar in town, Mothers Bar and Grill (Located where the Boheme was) is owned and run by the former manager of People's (From what I have been told, haven't been to ames to go there yet) and I'm told they have the same deals as People's (mason jars, etc)
That block NEEDS to be turned into a ped mall. It would be much better. The city just needs to find a new place for the fire station...possibly Somerset.

Do or do not, there is no try .....Yoda

I kinda doubt the city will ever give up that fire station.

When I was there in the early 90's it was considered invaluable as a staging area for police during VEISHEA.

Time have changed, but the way the city officials and certain hiearchy of the Ames PD wizzed their pants every April back then, I find it unlikely.....

Speaking of times changing - I wonder if every spring they still practice tear gassing and storming the city warehouse out on Dayton. I don't know - apparently it was thought a crew of drunk students were going to take hostages and hole up in Beardshear or something. One of the scariest memories of my college years was seeing a handful of certain Ames PD members dressed up in riot gear with auto-weapons.

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

All the talk about Peoples as the favorite, best, etc. bar reminds me of the age of those who say those things, and the age of people like me who were around long before Peoples and had different favorite/best bars.
To each (generation) his or her own.

Cave Inn! Only bar in history of Iowa State that was also the most popular cheer during football games. "all the way to the cave inn" was chanted anytime we had the ball headed towards the south endzone. (towards campus town.

When did you go to school? Before the compass was invented?

That's what they told me.

Didn't see the actual event, but I did see a few walking out of the police station dressed as such and other guys I worked with/worked at the warehouse, told me that was what was going on.

Edit: I can/could believe it. But I think it had more to do with tear gas training and entering buildings as such. It was a plenty scary sight seeing certain members of the Ames PD back then dressed up like they were.

I figured that

But did the Cave move or something? Wasn't it on Welch?

FWIW - The only thing we had was "Let's head south" or "All the way to Lincoln Way". Inspiring, I know.....

The Cave was where Paddy's is (IIRC). The plaque is still on the building, the logo was something from the B.C cartoon with a caveman dragging off a woman by the hair.

He didn't need a compass to know the Cave Inn was south of the stadium.
Yes, that was Clyde Williams and Torks Pub on West Street was where we headed during halftime.

We used to cheer "all the way to Lincoln Way" before the Cave Inn. But then I'm old as well. A few tried to keep it up in the new stadium when we were heading north. But, it never caught on.

My bad.

How about "all the way to Wallaby's" That's south as well.

Also - "All the way to Lincoln Way" was around at least in the early 90's.

Wasn't Duggan's Deli over there? Closed mid-90's?
