George Amundson..one of our best!

Just a note to let those interested I emailed George Amundson recently to see if I could get his autograph on a throwback helmet I bought. What a classy guy! He not only said no problem, but was surprised anyone still remembered him. This is one of the best players Iowa State put out. Big 8 player of the year and lots of votes for the Heisman. If past friends or fans want to make contact, he said it would be OK if I posted his email. Here it is.

Fantastic all-around athlete. He could of easily been an all-american in baseball. Cannon for an arm, and solid hitter. Javelin chucker as well.

1970-72.
Played QB and RB.
First-team all-Big Eight in 1972. All-American in 1972, finished 7th in Heisman voting.
Big Eight Player of the Year (1972).
First-round NFL Draft pick (Houston) in 1973.

Runner up for the heisman and 7th, are two different things. Thanks for the info.

I know I'm not alone in not knowing the history of this man. Most of the posters on here were not alive when George was getting with the honies in Ames Iowa.

I edited my post, but actually I thought he was runnerup. He beat out the winner of the Heisman for Big 8 player of the year. I assume the poster is correct, but I'll check the facts.

It actually surprises me that people wouldn't know who he is. Maybe people didn't know that he was 7th in the Heisman voting or what years he played, but to not even be familiar with the name. He played about 13 years before I was born and I know him and that he was a great QB for us.

You guys need to read up, and you call yourself fans?

George Amundson is all over the ISU record books.

For example, he has 31 rushing TDs, only 5 less than all-time leader Troy Davis.
He's 5th on the list for total offense (ahead of Troy Davis who is 7th)
He's 8th on the list for Touchdown passes.

I'm not old enough to remember him either, but I do know he is one of the best players ever at ISU.

There are a few a lot of Iowa State autographs I'd like. Amundson's, Seneca, Rosenfels, the Mayor to name a few. With a throwback helmet in my collection, getting Amundson will be sweet.
