Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
Hello everybody, I'm not new to this board, I've been visiting fanatic for over a year now. But I have never got active in posting because I forgot my username and just decided to make a new one the other day. I wont post much because I do occasionally get some inside info (like many of you do)...... however, I was scrolling down espn a little bit ago and I saw that Charlie Weis is going to get involved in the offensive play calling again. ESPN - Charlie Weis plans more active role with Notre Dame Fighting Irish offense
My quesiton to you is, do you think Chizik would step in and help out Bolt, given his success at Auburn and Texas (yes, they had the players to help him out as well).... but anyways, what's your guys' thoughts?

Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
Gene is ultimately responsible for the team/program, right? Defense is a glaring weakness right now...yeah?
I think it's fair to say it's a combo of the play on the field and coaching. I like Bolt and I like our players - but neither are getting it done.
We have a HC who is known as being a fantastic DC - has awards for it. I think it would be crazy if he wasn't taking more of a hands-on role with the defense and IMO, this should have occurred weeks ago. And for all we know, it has been taking place.
I mean, while the defense did let us down - they were better Saturday.

Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
I don't think so because Chizik was the Defensive Coord for both Auburn and Texas, so he had nothing to do with the offense. Now, I can see him getting involved with the defensive side.
On a side note, I really hope that Chizik does not get involved with the offense because I hate it when good talented Defensive Coord try to run an offense. Mac did it and I think that was part of his downfall. So, even though Mac played offense at UI, he was still a defensive minded coach (look at him at South Florida and Florida now) and should not have got involved with the offensive side of the house.
But, as Head Coach, you can do anything you want b/c it is your team!

Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
Correction: I see how my thread could be misleading... I don't mean to have chizik help out on offense like Weis is, but to help the defense out.
I was just mentioning that other coaches (like Weis) are doing it to their weaker parts of the team, why not Iowa State.
Sorry for the confusion

He's already involved...you can count on it.

Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
I figured he would just naturally be helping Bolt out a lot, considering his background.

Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
I thought you meant would he go to using crutches to gain sympathy for his team.....like Weis did.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
Clearly Gene needs to get more involved with the defensive playcalling and in general needs to be more involved with the defensive scheme. People can bring up the talent issues all they want (and clearly there are talent issues) but there are way too many instances where we are SEVERELY out of position...it's disturbing how often it happens, and Gene needs to address it, yesterday.

Didn't Charlie tear his ACL while reaching for a sandwich?
"Bring it all to the table. Don't hold nothin' back," he said. "I want you. I want the ball. I want your head. I throw my body into 'em and hit them." - #23 Leonard Johnson -

I don't disagree at all. I can't help but think Coach has been an influence on linebacker play too, since he played linebacker, and I would be amazed if he wasn't/hasn't been involved with the defensive backfield very early on, as well.
Would everyone agree that last years edition of the DB's was at least adequate?

Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
If he is not intimately involved on the defensive side of the ball then he should be. I know that with Saban's teams the DC is that in name only...Nick Saban calls the shots on defense for his team since that is his background. And Saban works intimately with the DBs since that is what he played and where he got his start coaching.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
Re: Would Chizik do a Charlie Weis?
If Gene is not involved,he better get on it right now, Still think Bolt needs looked at,when the season is over!

Vs. that defense, I don't see Chase Daniel putting up anything less than 450 yards on 30 for 32 passes with like 6 TDs.

What amazes me is how teams consistently run the SAME plays over and over and we never adjust. Ever. Maybe our players are just that bad that they simply don't have the phsyical/mental ability to make the reads/plays, I don't know. But it appears to me that our opponents know exactly what will work and know we won't do anything to adjust. Isn't there something the coaches can at least try?
