The Cyclones defense has been horrible this year. There is no way to spin a way around that and I think some of blame has to go on the coaching staff. I understand that the guys that a playing are young, and some are not as talented as we would hope, but every week the opposing QB has a career day. Don't forget that all of the teams that ISU is playing were defended better by some pretty weak non-conference teams. It is really sad.

We need players to be able to coach before coaches can start being fired.

If there are any changes, this is where it will take place.
I doubt we will see any however...too soon.

No way. It's too soon.
It took Pinkle 6 or 7 years to just get winning. We're in year 2.

we have gaping holes on defense (for example, a safety slot, with Chris Brown injured), and you want to blame the coaching for it? Chris was injured on the next to last play of Spring ball. There's no way the coaches could have anticipated that, to recruit for it.

No, but it doesnt help. Tackling is common sense, and notice we suck at it. Thats not a coaching error. Getting burned on runs is not a coaching error.

Our special teams were about last in a lot of categories last year. This year we have very good special teams. New coach? no. New players? yes.

This is very true. I keep forgetting how attrocious we were in this last year. Adjustments and recruiting cleaned it up pretty good.

That said, I believe Chizik's going to start fielding a competitive team in the next few years. I am surprised the defense isn't better as, if I recall, it showed some real progress as last year went on. Last year ISU was 7th in total defense in conferece play - this year dead last. Did the Cyclones lose a lot from that defense?

I hope you are kidding.
We lost THREE guys to the NFL. THREE. That for Iowa State football is HUGE. Bowen, Banks, Rubin. We also lost Chris Brown and Bailey Johnson with injury.
So yeah we lost 5 of our best players on D. Chizik is stuck playing the freshman that he recruited vs having the luxury of playing quality backups that he was NEVER left from Coach Mac.

Did the Cyclones lose a lot from that defense? Well A. Rubin was one of the better D tackles in the conference and Ace Bowen's speed at linebacker is obviously missed a great deal.
Edit: ajk was too quick for me. Forgot about John Banks.

I wasn't kidding - just ignorant. I didn't know McCartney was still recruiting NFL talent at the end. I can only really obsess about one team.
FYI - Iowa State currently has more NFL players than TT, KU, MU, and Baylor. MU and Baylor have 6 - only Duke has fewer among BCS conference teams. I wrote something about this earlier this year. Atomic Teeth » Blog Archive » Tigers and the Big 12 in the NFL | | |

The Chris Brown arguement is kinda weak as he played the last 2 games and we still gave up points when he was in.
Our biggest issue is in the trenches, mostly on defense. Once again, the QB had all day to pick us apart. And our poor safety play just allowed a faster death.
