Re: Recruiting "dead period" is approaching rather quickly
I personally like to see more recruiting gambles like LJ, Haughton, SJ, KO and then give Iowans preferred walk-on status like Campbell.
With the exception of Haughton, I certainly wouldn't call the guys you listed as gambles. If that's what they are, I'll take all of the "gambles" we can get.
Consider their other offers...
LJ - Michigan, West Va, Nebraska, Illinois, etc.
SJ - Michigan, A&M, Nebraska, Mizzou, etc.
KO - Mizzou, TCU, Houston

Re: Recruiting "dead period" is approaching rather quickly
What I meant by gambles is that we gambled on going up against bigger name competition for out-of-state talent that has the ability to let us compete on the field against the top tier programs in the Big 12 instead of gambling on giving a scholarship to a marginal player from Iowa and gambling that he pans out (Landon Streit, Jordan Goos, Collins Eboh...) Staying in Iowa or only competing against lower tier programs for recruits is not as much of a gamble. Therefore, the lower the risk the lower the reward.

When you sign instate kids you also get more instate intrest in your program. Instate kids have worked in places for Iowa. They have worked in places in the past for ISU. Look at this years roster and see how many Iowa players played this year. Many of those that played were the better players on the team. Granted there needs to be better talent, but if Iowa kids can be solid and make a difference there should be a place for them on the team. The last think ISU needs is a coach that burns the bridges with the HS FB coaches in the state. Missouri did that in the past and it took a lot for them to get back in good graces with HS coaches in that state. A staff needs to atleast be in good standing with the coaches in the state so when that DI player comes along they can have a shot at him. A problem this staff has is it seems they are not in the good graces of the local media and instate HS coaches. Great point if GC committed to "recruiting" not just offering the top 4-8 prospects(depending on the year) in the state of Iowa every year ISU would be in much better shape in the short and long run. Are there "Busts" in recruiting in the state of Iowa? Absolutely! There are in every other state too. I don't think anyone here is saying live or die buy in-state recruits. Some are saying the TOP Iowa kids are a sound investment.

I think it is a joke that people get mad that we lose iowa prospects typically that are no better than 2 stars. If we had a bulk of the talent in state, then we would recruit harder in state. Name the last player that we had drafted into the NFL that was an iowa native. (cricket chirps) Carstens maybe? (meyer and blythe were not drafted). I am not saying dont recruit people from iowa, but if we can get better talent out of texas and california then we can afford to be more selective with who we recruit in-state.
I for one hope to get an OC and possibly DC that can just plane RECRUIT, anywhere. I dont care where they are from as long as they have talent, and we dont see then in the des moines registers' criminal mischief section.

He lived in Cuba City, but Dubuque Wahlert is a catholic private high school so they could get kids from East Dubuque & Galena Illinois and also from Southwest Wisconsin towns. Half of their high school is from out of state it seemed like. Say, if their kid was good at basketball, Wahlert would "recruit" them... I hated them for that, being a Dubuque Senior Alum.
