Question What is wrong with ISU?

Why is it so hard to recruit to Ames? I was just noticed that Jon Lechner supposedly committed to Ohio on Monday. For those that don't know, he is a 3 star OT and is rated 80 at ESPN (SJ was 79). He had offers from Ohio, Buffalo, Louisianan Tech, Iowa State and Wisconsin (he actually committed to Wisconsin and then decommitted).

This make me ask the question, why is it that ISU can win over a solid player when it is the only BCS school in consideration and is within 200 miles of the player (he's from Omaha). It's obviously not the weather because Ohio isn't much better. It can't be the lack of prestige, he committed to OHIO. What is it that turns players away from Ames?

I'm not trying to pick on you jaretac, but posts like this make me want to pull my hair out. For those who were following Lechner's recruitment, this is no surprise. He commited to Wisconsin, "decommited" for reasons he hasn't discussed, and had some offers pulled (Wisconsin, Nebraska, probably ISU). Clearly something happened that made a number of different schools decide to pass on him.

Like I said, I'm not trying to pick on you, but it gets tiresome seeing people post negative things about ISU based on things they have little knowledge of. We all jump to conclusions sometimes, myself included, so we all could do a better job in that department.

Good example of a guy whose play doesn't match the hype. From what I've seen of him, he's a poor man's Fisher twin with similar (i.e. poor) footwork.

well if he's from Omaha and going to play for Frank Solich - that makes sense. I wouldn't read too much into it, especially wiht Cyfan15 saying that there were reasons why scholarship offers were pulled.

Re: What is wrong with ISU?

This thread is why in general I don't follow recruiting seriously until signing day. We don't bring in one particular recruit (and yeah, in this situation it looks like we pulled the offer instead of the assumption that he rejected us) and suddenly the world's coming to an end and every moral fabric of the football team in particular and the athletic department and university in general must be questioned. It gets really tiresome.

Re: What is wrong with ISU?

I was actually looking at possible recruits a couple months ago and landed on Lechner. The reason for the committment and the decomittment to Wisc. was grades. His scout.com profile listed his ACT score as a 20, which must have been updated from something that was in the teens earlier this year. He just doesn't have the grades to get in, and going the juco route and coming back, we've seen what that does for us (Carpenter).

NO TRADITION...NO MONEY...basically that means that ISU will have a terrible time recruiting next to say Mizzou or K-State...

And geography does us no good either. by being on the fringe of a basically southern conference its darned hard to get quality players up from Texas...

I think schools with low athletic budgets like Ia State and K State need to recruit for their defense and emphasize that side of the ball...quoting Blair Kerkoff KC Star

It must be the time of year or something. I loved Iowa State, my inlaws loved Iowa State, my friends loved Iowa State. We all must be nuts, right?

Oh no you didn't! We used to visit Chris' after a round of golf in Colo. After that place closed, I think all the ladies of the night moved to the outer limits.
