Mac will go down as one of the greatest, but he peaked and wasn't continuing the upward climb at ISU. No hatred here for Mac, but am glad he moved on and will someday be at a better head job anyway. Hats off to Florida and Mac.

It is a lot easier for the so-called haters to get over it when there aren't nearly weekly posts extolling the virtues of the guy.

The only reason for that is the state of our program now. If we were on the upswing, no one would give a **** about Dan McCarney. But we've gotten worse.

You don't understand. You can't have it both ways. Here on Cyclone Fanatic you either believe McCarney was the greatest head football coach in history and would currently have ISU in a BCS bowl game, or you believe that McCarney can't tell a quarterback from a nickelback, and as the D-line coach at Florida is really just the waterboy. There is no inbetween.

Perhaps. But the '06 season was not exactly a banner year either. Four wins that just as easily could have been four losses. Not close in any of the other games. To be consistent, I am on board with Gene for the next 2-3 years but he has to produce. Exactly what I was saying about DM.

Dan is remembered fondly (A) because of the guy he was, but much more because (B) we aren't winning, and fans naturally recall the "good 'ole days," if you can call them that.
This time of year is especially painful for teams sitting home, because there are so many bowls for Big XII teams. We used to go under Dan, and fans remember.

Can't argue with that. It is MUCH better to go to any bowl than to be sitting home.

I'm on the side that says he was one of our most successful coaches in history.....and it pains me to think our most successful coach couldn't win even 40% of the games he coached.

I'm willing to bet at least half of the fans out there would argue that sitting at home is better than playing Boise St in their home stadium for a bowl...

The D-line coach certainly has some impact but you take away McCarney and put someone else in that slot and I doubt the outcome of this season is any different.

I am sick of the McCarney fawning!
So at Iowa State if we lose, it's the coordinators and assistants fault, GC can do no wrong.

But at Florida if they win all the credit goes to the Head Coach. The Assistant Head Coach gets no credit for that?

    Good to know.

Other than ego, why wouldn't Dan just enjoy the Iowa State millions he made, stay out the fray as a position coach, and bask in the Florida sun?

    Too funny.

Was just talking to my son about that over the weekend. Told him I didn't like BSU because of the blue turf and told him the story of the bowl game.

I'm with you. Coach Mac always handled himself with class and represented the University well. He built up the program to a point where they were competing for a bowl game every year (which is saying something for ISU), but at the same time I was excited about the coaching change, and I'm still optimistic Chizik will turn things around even though his first couple years have been rough.
