In this case, Gene didn't even ask. Auburn did. And Jamie granted that permission. So with that permission, your parallel to recruits keeping their word fails right there.
I hope that if, in the end you are proven wrong, you are a big enough man to admit it. All of you. As I will be. So you think Auburn just picked up the phone and called Pollard looking for permission to speak with Chizik. Or do you think maybe Chizik has an agent that contacted Auburn first.
That is how most coaching interviews come about and the one school calling another school for permission is just a formality thing, most interviews (not all) have already been conducted by time a school receives permission. A coaches agent contacts a school to see if that school has interest in said coach and then they set up an interview or have an interview if there is mutal interest, if they can't get a hold of the AD by time of said interview then the permission thing happens after the interview.
If you don't think Chizik's agent contacted Auburn before they contacted him then wow.

Re: Gene Chizik - All Bridges Lead Out of Ames
candg4ever- I agree with some of your comments, but not about the ISU fan base, and I was under the impression Gene Smith left to get to a more metro area for his personal interests. I could be wrong about this, but I thought I heard that we drew nearly as many fans per game as Oky State (a highly ranked team) but even if that's wrong I think ISU fans are extremely patient and extremely loyal as long as we feel the coach is loyal to ISU. Sure coaches leave for bigger programs but not before getting the job done that they are being paid millions of dollars to do. Gene seems to be giving up pretty quickly on our program, and I would say the rumors of his complaining to other coaches about coming here may be true. Fact is, Gene was unproven as a head coach and was a risky hire in the first place, especially compared to a proven head coach like Brian Kelly. We gave him his opportunity and millions of dollars, and if he wants to leave that's fine with me. He's done nothing in his first two years to show me he has the overall coaching ability to get the job done anyway.

That has to come from outside.
I really hate when people read more into my words than is there. Or, than they know to be there. Why would you think that Chizik (or his agent) had to have called up Auburn? As if they were incapable of coming up with the idea themselves? If you don't know, I don't think you can assume the reverse to be the case.

Re: Gene Chizik - All Bridges Lead Out of Ames
This whole situation has been poorly handled. Yes coachs interview for other jobs but most if the time it is kept quite. When I interviewed for jobs I sure didnt tell my boss I was looking elsewhere. We have not heard anything of of Chizik about this. Pollard has spoken meaning he is probly leaving. ADs dont call other ADs to ask persmission, they call to tell them they are going to hire their coach, ask them what needs to be done to get the coach out of his contract. All the other so called hires in the Auburn smashed the rumors fast. Chizik hasnt done that, infact his boss has said he is a likly canadate. JP is also in spin mode on this and not talking to the media. Guys and gals he is as good as gone IMO, the coaching search started yesterday afternoon. This isnt the first thing Chizik has miss handled and wont be the last. Lets hope this time in the coaching search both parties know what they are getting into.

Do we really need a separate thread for this?

Re: Gene Chizik - All Bridges Lead Out of Ames
At least with Pollard being a business man we can hope for a good deal for Chizik.
