Re: Iowa State's Rep... That bad?
You know what? Part of ISU's problem is the alumni. Where are the big donors that other schools have? Let's face it, in today's world, you can't survive in college football without money. When Notre Dame wanted to fire Willingham 3 years ago, alumni were there to pony up the buyout cost. When Alabama wanted to get serious about a coach, alumni gave money to the AD to go after Saban. Hell, even Iowa has more alumni support. They already have $10M for football facilities...
Iowa State will never be at that level because the alumni refuse to commit to the program. Kansas and Kansas State have both proven that winners can be made out of nothing programs in the midwest.
Re: Iowa State's Rep... That bad?
Money, influence, and power.....Auburn bought out Tubby for 5.1 Million.....

$750k with 3 years on a contract? That, is weak. Especially to a 1st time HC. That is a weak out clause.
We essentially gave Chiz a two-year HC learning ground - a place where he could come and make his mistakes before heading to a better place.
The OP is right, and I stated same yesterday. It is sad for us that the only national press we seem to get is for stuff like this, when we even look worse than the coach that left with the 5-19 record......because, you know, he was coaching at ISU....5 wins is exceptional.....

Our biggest one-time donation - a $5MM donation earlier this year - was made to us by an IOWA grad. That says a whole lot, no?!
Re: Iowa State's Rep... That bad?
That is a sad statement you just said CyPride...and proof that no one should believe that Iowa State can't be a winner...it can, it just needs dedication from more than just the administration.

I think Jamie has already addressed this problem . . and now we have people (mostly Hawk fans) that want him fired. I think this thread perpetuates the myth ISU is a loser school. I don't believe that at all.
By the way . . for all the Hawk lurkers, you smart "donkeys" that harp about ISU dropping down a level or two in the NCAA . . is that why you wanted Missouri in the Big Little 10?? You know, the school that has fewer conference championships in the Big 12 than ISU??:biglaugh:
Re: Iowa State's Rep... That bad?
When we get a coach I hope it is one that get a quick fix and get us some wins. Brilliant huh? But seriously, if we can bring a guy in to get us on a semi-roll knowing that he is a short timer then the next time we can get a proven coach and keep it going. Crawling before we walk, walking before we run. I don't see us getting a top notch coach right now. We will get a coordinator that can point us in the right direction and then leave but not leave with the cupboard bare. Hopefully Chizquitter has started that and the next coach can take us a little farther. We are in the baby step mode right now. IF we get the right coach we have a chance.
Re: Iowa State's Rep... That bad?
The years Bruce and DMac built this rep, but he proved otherwise. Note the ESPN article that had to reference the 13 years prior to DMac. Dan must have been THE best coach in the country!!! I can't understand why he wasn't hired away during his tenure or after he left.
A good coach can win at ISU. DMac was a good coach, but there are better that could do better here. ISU has gotten better over the last 15 years, but the rest of the conference has improved too.
It sounds as though GC was Auburn 8th option, so I think it says more about the politics there and how there search was handeled; than it does about ISU.

I believe the "Big Donors" are still paying LE, DMac, and Wayne Morgans contracts.
Re: Iowa State's Rep... That bad?
We've had 2 years since 1978 where we have finished above .500 in the conference. 4-3 in 1989 and 5-3 in 2000. Kinda shows how tough it is to win here.

Strangely, the only thing we've got going for us at the moment is that we apparently didn't kill GC's career. We might not be as much of a risk to aspiring coaches' careers as I previously thought.
I hope that we can get out of this slump soon. We need some stability at ISU in a major men's program... I hope Pollard can bring someone who can retain the players. All this turnover is driving me nuts.
The following coaches have won at ISU...John Majors-Earle Bruce & Dan McCarney...
All of the other coaches in my lifetime were LOSERS ALLL OF THEM WERE LOSERS!!!
ISU is the toughest job in all of college football and if you get a coach who wins ...DON'T FIRE THE GUY!!!
I think old Jamie Fire Em Pollard made a big mistake and the fans will pay for this mistake for all long long time!!

I have said for the last 40 years that ISU has the WORST ALUMNI GROUP IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND I AM GLAD I AM NOT AN ALUM!!!
"No Money ...No Winning...Its the new paradigm in college football!!!

I am an alum and pretty damn proud of it, for a number of reasons that go far beyond the performance of our athletics programs.
Re: Iowa State's Rep... That bad?
Woe is me! You know, in 2007 (08 numbers aren't released yet), ISU outdrew these "name" programs: KSU, KU, Miami (FL), Utah, BC, Oregon St., Okie St., Louisville, Stanford, Syracuse, Washington St, Pitt, Wake Forest, Boise St, Cincinnati, TCU, Indiana, Northwestern, Vanderbilt. They were also within a couple thousand a game of Ole Miss, GT, Colorado, Texas Tech, Arizona, Illinois. And that was in a pretty bad year. I suspect that not much as changed in 2008. I know that ISU's attendance hasn't dropped off much.
To say that it can't be done at ISU is either defeatist or hawkeye. Both are crap. We have good attendance, decent facilities, a great school and we pay our coaches decent. All we need is a staff that can evaluate, recruit and develop players. Yeah, it's tough to find that guy, but if we do, there's no glass ceiling at ISU. Have some succes, recruiting gets easier. Then take those recruits and have more success. It can happen.
