Mark Farley (Long)

I hate to be 'that guy', the one who starts another coaching thread. However, I want to get fellow 'Clones opinions on Mark Farley.

First of all, we would all agree that our next coach needs to be LOYAL. I know he interviewed for other jobs, but GC's predecessor was an Iowan, and he loved Iowa. ISU needs to be more than just another notch in the belt of a head coach (to steal a line from Wedding Crashers). I may be wrong, but many of the coaches currently looking to move up in the coaching ranks will be at ISU only until a better offer comes along.

This brings me to Mark Farley. Farley is an Iowan, through and through. He isn't the most attractive hire, and who knows how well he will recruit top talent. However, he loves UNI, and he could fall in love with ISU. He's had tons of success, sent several players to the NFL, and proven he's a football genius. In addition, the fact that he may not be an A+ recruiter (just an assumption) doesn't mean he can't have bountiful success at ISU (see McCarney, Dan).

I want a coach whose dream job is Iowa State - not a coach who just happens to accept the job because it is a detour on the road to a top 20 job.



p.s. GC was going to leave as soon as his first solid southern offer came along, and in my opinion, the timing is solid for ISU fans. While I'm disappointed in his decision, I'm not sure I should be; consider this:

If you grew up in the Midwest, took a job at Principal out of college, accepted a job transfer to Trenton, New Jersey, and then got offered a promotion with better pay in Des Moines, would you take it?

While I'm disappointed in his decision, I guess I can't fault GC entirely, and I'm excited to see where this program heads.

other than a bad ISU team and IAA competition who has he beaten. No thanks. I will stick with coaches who have proven they can beat bigger schools. ISU is a MAJOR step up from UNI and I think Farley would be out of his league...much like mcdermott.

It's funny when someone starts a with that sentence, and then proceeds to start yet another thread about a coach that has already been discussed in other threads. Kind of like when someone makes an intentional pun and says "no pun intended." Or when someone says "no offense, but..." and then says something really offensive.

His program at UNI is far from clean. Part of the reason he is so successful is getting retreads that left bigger programs.

I will stick with coaches who have proven they can beat bigger schools. ISU is a MAJOR step up from UNI.

Farley and UNI did beat Chizik and ISU the last time they played.

I don't particularly want Farley, but I agree with the OP's point that we need someone who wants to be here. Someone who views ISU as a destination job and not a stepping stone, and who will put down roots and establish recruiting pipelines accordingly.

I gotta be honest, SeattleClone: I figured Farley was mentioned elsewhere, but I have too much of a life to spend 3 hours reading through a 1,000 post forum to see if I could find the name 'Mark Farley.'

I understand the frustration though, I really do...I'm sure my post was rather annoying.

ISU would be LUCKY to have Mark Farley.

Farley would scare off not only all of Chiziks recruits but all our future D-1 talent as well. Farley is where he needs to be. UNI coaches don't go on to do good things very often.
