Johnny Orr type hire?

Terry Bowden would be that guy for me. I don't care what you think about his announcing abilities, the guy can coach. He's also been known to hire some excellent assistants.

If we went out and dropped 3 million + on a head coach. He better be a guy we all **** our pants when he signs on. I wouldn't mind it at all but you are correct Turner Gill isn't the guy to make that type of offer to.

By doing this you also set a precident about what you are willing to pay. If the guy comes in and leaves in two years, the next coach who comes in will be expecting something similar if not more.

Someone who is already a head coach at a strong program having success. Someone that has coached his team to the National Championship game and not won. Someone that nobody thinks would ever come to ISU.

The name that pops into my head is Frank Beamer. Anyone else have any thoughts?

and he can talk like a son of a *****. he'd be in a recruits home, the player would be like "i don't know what you just said coach, but i'm going to I-STATE!!!

This is a guy, we might have a chance with if we paid that kind of money and I think the fans would be ok with paying that type of money.

Plus he got a hot tub. If you were around in those days Johnny used to mention that quite a bit.

I remember that the ISU AD at the time (Max Urick?) called Johnny to ask about an assistant, and Johnny asked how much ISU was offering, so he could tell the guy. When he heard how much it was, he decided he wanted the job, because Romie wouldn't have to work any more. :yes:

Is that avatar of yours Terry Bowden's HS graduation picture? Or has he gone on a slim fast diet, had a face lift, and dyed his hair?

I can't stand Terry Bowden! But to me, Tuberville would most likely be the Johnny Orr type hire in the way to stick it to the man, and retire being successful in the Big 12.

I don't agree. Texas and LSU want to keep their coaches; Michigan had no interest in keeping Orr.
The year after Johnny and Michigan made the 1976 NCAA title game, he had them ranked at #1 or close to it - until they got upset by UNC-Charlotte in the NCAA tournament. That was a bad loss.
Subsequently, Orr's final three years at Michigan were: 16-11; 15-12; and 17-13. Not quite in the Mack Brown or Les Miles category. He was also taking heat for losing in-state recruiting battles to Michigan State. Magic Johnson anyone?
Michigan did not match ISU's offer, and Orr left to come here.

I like this line of thinking – a Tubby Smith type of hire. Who is a big name, has been at their school for along time, has had good success but recently maybe not as much, and is just sick and tired of the current pressure he’s under? I’m drawing a blank but there has to be somebody.

I thought that Magic grew up in Lansing? That would be an awfully tough battle to win.

If I remember correctly it wasn't that astronomical a sum of money. But Michigan was just extremely lowballing Johnny Orr. This was a guy who had been in the National Title game and who had the #1 rated team in the nation for a while. Iowa State was wondering about Johnny's assistant Bill Frieder. When Johnny found out that Frieder would be starting out with significantly more money than he was making, Orr negotiated a deal and took it himself.

For the record, Johnny Orr was making around $107,000 in 1994-95. And if memory serves me right I believe his original ISU salary was $60,000. And that wouldn't have made him the highest paid coach in the nation back in 1981.
