Johnny Orr type hire?
What would be the equivalent of a Johnny Orr type hire in today's world to fill our head coaching slot in FB?
Someone who is already a head coach at a strong program having success. Someone that has coached his team to the National Championship game and not won. Someone that nobody thinks would ever come to ISU.
The name that pops into my head is Frank Beamer. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

Iowa State can't compare. It would be like Saban going to Baylor

In this day and age, would Johnny Orr ever leave Michigan to come to Iowa State?

Re: Johnny Orr type hire?
As I recall, ISU made JO the highest paid college MBB coach in the nation. I don't think ISU has the money to make the next FB coach the highest paid BCS coach in the nation...

Well, probably not the highest, but lets say we cracked the top 10 with a guy like Patterson? Unlikely...but just say we did...
No "if he wins, I'm ok with it" - today, if it's announced that someone like Patterson is hired and got a huge contract...
What's the fan response?

Re: Johnny Orr type hire?
Could be wrong here, but I think Johnny also came here to get away from some BS at Michigan. Today, I think the BS is everywhere. -

I know it is highly unlikely...I just wanted to dream positive thoughts a little and see if anyone else was interested in doing the same.
I'm not sure Johnny would make the change today but guess what...no one thought he would back then...not the UM people...heck not even our own AD when he called him to get permission to talk to Bill Frieder.

What's the fan response? I wouldn't have a problem with it, but the name would have to be bigger than Patterson. JO at Michigan would be something more like a Mac Brown, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Mike Leach, Urban Meyer etc.

Re: Johnny Orr type hire?
I think John Cooper would be the equivalent. Although he is older than even J.O. was when he came. Big time coach that wasn't appreciated by his school. Although Johnny came directly after leaving the school. Pat Hill would probably be the closest example. (Note: this is a direct response to the question, not a comment on whether they are on a list or a candidate of anything...)

What's the fan response? I personally would be all in favor of this. $3 million gets you in the top 10 today. If Iowa can pay Ferentz that why can't we pay that for someone? I'm not talking a Turner Gill or an unproven coordinator...I'm talking a proven winner at a top tier school. Heck, today Beamer and Butch Davis only make $2.1, Spurrier and Tedford come in at only about $1.8. Being around $1 million is average to below average wages for a CFB HC today.
Am I the only one that thinks you usually get what you pay for?

Re: Johnny Orr type hire?
What if we gave a little bit more to Patterson than Minnesota offered. The rumors claim they were going to give him $2million.
What if we gave him $2.5million? Before people go nuts thinking I'm onto something here, this is merely for conversation. I have not heard a thing about Patterson other than my hopes that we could bring him to Ames.
