It concerns me he couldn't keep up with the Joneses in SEC (Florida, Georgia, Alabama) and lost his job because of it. Well, Florida, Georgia, Auburn.... Texas, Oklahoma, Tech.....

Not many coaches can keep up with Florida, Georgia, Alabama just like most can't keep up with Oklahoma, Texas, but I would bet anything he could keep up with other North teams and have you guys winning North titles or at least in position to win them in the near future. I think it would be an outstanding hire if he is interested.

Phil Fulmer - 1992-08 - 152-52..... Very good
Ok, i regret making the ground comment. He just had a bad few years.

The Big 12 North is simply not going to be nearly as good in '09 as it was in '07 and to an extent '08.
IMO, right now the thing is Nebraska's to lose - but still pretty wide open. Do I think ISU has enough talent on the team now to win the North next year? Close. If either we can add some defensive linemen or current guys really step up - possibilities are there. Non-conference schedule is setup for wins - generating momentum.
But, we played the same damn conference schedule this year and lost all of them.
If Fulmer is interested and if the guy comes here - I'd feel damn good about it. Not just his ability to coach and track record (hello, my name is Phillip Fulmer and I have a national title...anyone still wanna leave?) - but also I'd think the guy aught to bring in some nifty assistants.
If we can still pay 'em by giving a contract to Fulmer.
I'd have to think boosters would put more zeros on those checks for this guy.

hiring Fulmer would be as close as it'd come, in my opinion. I agree........I cannot begin to state all of the positive things I think about this. My wife was laughing at me when we heard the news, because we weren't near a computer, and that was killing me. I don't think Fulmer would require a massive amount of money I don't think he is going to job hop to anywhere else any time soon. It gives our program and recruiting instant credibility. (a national championship under his belt!) It makes a splash nationally. Go get him Jamie! Edit- not to mention, he would attract some really good coordinators as well. AND he will appreciate the hell out of Cyclone fans after being run out of Tennessee. -
Re: 12/18 Official Coaching Search Thread
I will admit that I would suppor the hire of Fulmer for the most part. My biggest concern is who his assistants will be. He has always seemed to generate defenses that are capable of being very good. Yet his offenses seem to suffer if the right coordinator is not there. That is my largest concern, who he brings in to tutor Arnaud, coach the line and generate some points.
Past that, I think it would be a great hire.

Re: 12/18 Official Coaching Search Thread
Again, big if, yet if there is some credibility to this...
Has ISU ever had a coach with a national title, then come here? I know Johnny was close to having one at Michigan - but that's the closest one I can recall - can't think of a guy that actually got one and then eventually ended up here.

Re: 12/18 Official Coaching Search Thread
No matter how much talent he got every year at UT, it is nearly impossible to go undefeated these days. If losing 2-3 games in the SEC East is a bad season then I would take that any day. Going up against the likes of Florida and Georgia on a year in year out basis is not an easy task. To come out on top every now and then with that schedule is amazing.

Re: 12/18 Official Coaching Search Thread
My two cents...
If Fulmer is interested and will accept the job the coaching search should end right now.

Recruiting to TN is a lot different than recruiting to ISU. Would PF be able to work his recruiting magic in Ames?
That being said, I'd be on board with his hire.

That being said, I'd be on board with his hire. So how do you measure recruiting success if you have to convert it to "recruiting in ames" every time? This guy has a proven track record of recruiting and winning.
Remember this one guy he recruited......Peyton Manning?
