Re: 12/18 Official Coaching Search Thread
Hiring Phil Fulmer would be insane. Have you guys paid attention to his career at all over the years? Fulmer has a reputation of playing loose with the rules (in a conference that seems to celebrate that), recruiting thug type players and generally acting like a horse's ***.
He was also involved in a really sleazy situation where he tried to sic the NCAA on Alabama for apparent recruiting violations in exchange for the NCAA ignoring Tennessee's violations. Phil Fulmer would be the last person I'd want as coach. For what it is worth
Hard for me to get excited about a guy who's had mediocre teams at AZ in a mediocre Pac 10. The jury's still out on whether this guy can coach or not. I think he's a huge risk.

He won a national title at Arizona State in 1988, then took over at Iowa State in 1992 when Jim Gibbons "retired" at the advanced old age of 33.
As for my $0.02 on the whole Fulmer discussion, it would surprise me if he really was interested in taking over at Tennessee. He's going to paid fairly well over the next couple of years to kick his feet up on his desk in some administrative office on the UT campus and not coach football. I'd be surprised if the prospect of rebuilding a lethargic Iowa State program would be be appealing to him.
That said, if he is interested, I think we have to give him serious consideration. Obviously, several Cyclone Fanatics have helped themselves to a big swig of the "Phil Fulmer Haterade" they've been serving up in Knoxville over the last few years. But the truth is, the guy can recruit, and he can coach. Maybe the Vols fans were frustrated that he wasn't winning national titles every single year after he won it in 1998. But I would take Fulmer's brand of "underachieving" -- a 152-52 record, 15 bowl games, and 14 seasons finishing in the Top 25 rankings -- at Iowa State in a heartbeat.
BvK, you've got to quit making so much sense because I "must spread some rep around" before giving more to you. (Original quote by wonkadog.) -

With Pollard as usual it is a slight of hand trick. While we are all looking over here he will come from over there

I think if you look at Fulmers passion for Tennessee and implant that into Ames with the hope that he takes up ISU as his stepson...an ISU Fulmer connection could be great

Phillip Fulmer regards his job as a COACH, not a BABY SITTER. Name me one school...anywhere...that hasn't had a kid go off and do something he shouldn't.
As far as your links....confirmed. Phillip Fulmer DID report Alabama to the NCAA for recruiting violations.
The NCAA DID find all kinds of MUCK inside the Bama program and damn near got the death penalty for it. The only people who dont believe it....bammers...those inside the Crimson nation who are too ignorant to know anything other than what Paul Slimebaum tells them.
They are so irate over it that a few of them are suing the NCAA and want Fulmer to testify...and when you are wanted in court, you get served a SUPOENA.
And why are BAMA fans glad to see Fulmer go? Could it be the 11-5 record he had against them???
Word of advice....take heed before you listen to a bammer fan!

Word of advice....take heed before you listen to a bammer fan! Was Fulmer ever in trouble with the NCAA? I really had the impression he did. Maybe it colored my view of him for the negative. I would love it if the program was totally clean. I would feel much better about the hire.

Stoops hiring looms?
Posted by Marty Tirrell on December 18, 2008
Multiple sources now are telling us that the negotiations with Arizona head coach Mike Stoops
are in the ‘final stages’…any announcement of Stoops’ hiring would be put off until Monday as Arizona plays BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl Saturday night.
A source told us a short time ago that the University of Illinois staff had word of Stoops’ hiring at ISU.
—more—
god...i hope not.
