Re: 12/19/2008 Official Coaching Search Thread
I am also confused about people putting an age limit on a coach. I mean who really cares how old he is. Barnett is 62 but he could still give us 5 solid years of coaching at least.
Age should not be something to consider unless your talking about Joe Paterno old.

It is an edgy hire if it turns out, but it is a medium risk/ high reward type of deal. Having said this, almost everyone will have some 'warts' if you look hard for them.
You are right:
-sex parties for recruiting is OK.
-So is having over 6 rape arrests in your program during your tenure.
-Having no sympathy for a member of your team that was raped
-Under-charging athletes for meal plans is cool too.
I'm sure there's many more. Sounds like a great family man. Can't wait!
Re: 12/19/2008 Official Coaching Search Thread
everyone has 'baggage', if Barnett, we are getting someone who has proven he can win places that others couldn't. That defines what we need.
If not - i'm sure a good candidate will be chosen. Get behind the choice, whomever it is, as the will want to be at ISU!!!

Fine, but his comments were still foolish, and showed very poor judgement. Don't need that around ISU...

Read a bit more about him @ his foundation website:

Again, please show me the quote where he implies she "deserved to be raped?"
So if it's not implying she deserved to be raped, it's certainly implying a lack of sympathy. Come on man! Even if he didn't say "she deserved it", the comment itself was classless and just plain dumb to say in front of the press after the woman came out with the story.
Barnett is scum IMO and I don't want him anywhere close to Ames. And, to be frank, I have to somewhat question the character of any fan who would want him coaching our student-athletes.
Yeah, I just said it.
I'm not defending the comments. They were dumb and insensitive, very actually and I never defended them. But you don't come on here and say he implied she deserved to be rape when that wasn't even close to what he said.

Remember this "Not only is she a female, but she can't kick!"
sorry if this has been posted, didn't feel like reading all of the pages.
Re: 12/19/2008 Official Coaching Search Thread
No to Barnett. Age and controversy make him a non-winner. Pat Hill, would be good. The guy can coach but not many ties to the Midwest. Mike Stoops, not the same caliber of coach as his brother, but there are worse. Todd Graham, has jumped a lot recently and didn't come across as too honest in his dealings with Rice. Charlie Strong, probably one of the few coordinators I might be willing to take. But once again we get back to bringing up a guy from the SEC who could jump ship if a job was offered back there. Skip Holtz, flashy name but would he want to be located here in the Midwest. Glen Mason, has ISU ties and is a proven head coach but it seems that he peaked at Minnesota. Compared to Brewster though, it seems that Mason wasn't as bad as it seemed. Gus Malzahn, an offensive genius who might just move up and take our job. Another coordinator I would take. Don't know about his recruiting ability and hasn't been a head coach. Bill Cubit, a decent head coach but no name recognition. Jay Norvell and Mark Farley, sorry but just not interested in them at this point.
Re: 12/19/2008 Official Coaching Search Thread
Man, some around here need to get their facts straight about Barnett.
He never had sex parties for recruits. Players took them to off-campus parties on recruiting trips sponsored by other students. You think that never happens anywhere else? It was NEVER condoned by Barnett.
NO ONE was EVER arrested for rape charges!..and believe me if there was ever a shred of evidence there were rapes, the Boulder DA would have charged them.
The under charging for meals things was an AD mistake, not a football coaches mistake. The AD is the one who ran the training table and handled it, not Barnett.
Get the facts straight, please.
There exists a real question as to whether Hnida was ever even raped. She refused to report it the police, refused to identify her supposed attacker. When Barnett made his comments about her, he was referring to why she wasn't accepted on the team. If you watch the whole press conference, he expressed ALOT of regret about what happened to her.

Well, true, everyone does have "baggage" to a certain degree. That being said, there is a difference between a carry-on size bag and 200 lbs. worth of luggage. Barnett has a few too many suitcases full of "baggage" for me.
It would be pretty much impossible for me to support ISU football with a "man" like Gary Barnett in charge.

That's fine, but it still doesn't mean I want him as a coach. I want to beat Iowa on the field, not the off-field "events". It's risking too much to put your AD career on, and the ceiling is going to be 7-5 when he gets some of his players. Too much risk for the reward.
I don't care about some foundation his lawyers set up for him so he could get a tax break every year lol.

With the rape charges.. There were 9 players arrested for rape charges, they just were never tried. That's 9 too many. Just being in the conversation is bad.
Re: 12/19/2008 Official Coaching Search Thread
The problems in Iowa City we rail on Iowa fans about are childs play compared to CU football. That's all I'm saying. Barnett was their leader during a lot of that, and I don't want him to be the leader of our student athletes.

Barnett would require a lot of vetting, but he's a heck of a coach and might be worth it. What was it? Four north titles in seven years?
Some of your "facts" have been refuted, by the way. Still, perception is king and one should tread lightly here. From what I've read here, Pollard is a man of integrity and will not abandon ethics for wins, so if it were Barnett, I'd imagine the vetting was intense.
