Re: Cotler this morning
I heard it and he not only trashed this year's class so far, but he was really putting down Chizik's classes as being last in the big 12 the other two years. I think he still has a thing for ISU for letting DMAC go and now we will magically get better rankings from him because he really likes PR.
He just did not have much to say good about our recruiting class at all and actually thought we would be better off with losing most of the recruits.
Kind of a typical Cotlar interview, he let his guest's bias come out without challenging him very much at all in his questioning.

Take it for what it was...one person's opinion and he's probably wrong...or...not. Cotlar has never had an opinion of his own.

Have we EVER had as many true freshman contribute as we did last year? That tells me alot about last year's class, stars or no stars...

Re: Cotler this morning
I didn't hear the interview this morning. Was he trashing the quality of the class, or was he saying that ISU wasn't getting recruits at "needs" positions?
Because that previous poster is correct in that Iowa's class is about the same in rival/scout "star" quality.

Re: Cotler this morning
Who cares what Lemming says.....He's paid to have his name associated to recruiting and that doesn't mean he has any idea of what's going on inside a program. And his discussion about the class, thats easy from behind his computer and looking at Rivals star rankings to determine where and what ISU needs. Its especially easy to pick on someone when the coach leaves, oh that means he can throw them under the bus.
To think that Chizik was putting this class together for anything other then being here next fall is saying you know absolutely nothing about ISU and its past classes. IMO this class has the talent to be one of the best recruiting classes i've seen come into ISU in the last 10 years.
Furthermore, there's no way anyone will convince me that the team on the field last fall was not more athletic then when Chizik took over. The only shortfall i saw last year was they hit a wall and the improvement to continue how you would hope when playing that many young guys. But to say anything other then ISU has the talent, we need a few key pieces and our team would be drastically different.
Again - if i had my preference here's my 2 cents on what will make us drastically better next year.
1-2 DT, possibly even JUCOS with size 310+ i want big cloggers in the middle and i don't care if they don't run the forty in under 5 seconds. I want my LB's running free and no runs right up the middle.
1-2 IMPACT DE, need someone that can apply pressure - last year we had zero...
1-2 LB, need an impact player here. Love Jesse Smith, he's steady but does not make the impact plays. Thats what we need and that could be a result of our d line playing the way they did last year.
1-2 Safety, in watching the games, our safeties were not in position to make plays. The thing we saw was a WR running wide open and blamed the CB. In reality, a lot of those were either breakdowns in coverage or the safety's either bit on play action or jump routes. Our safety play needs to improve. I would not be surprised if LJ makes the switch because he could be a huge weapon if allowed to roam a bit and hitter - we all know what kind of hitter he is - just ask Iowa TE Tony Moeaki!!!!!! Still was a legal hit!!!!
Lemming let me rate your stupidity if your calling this a bad recruiting class.....5* yep its confirmed Lemming is a blowhard and if you've seen him on tv, he thinks he's David Hasselhoff, sorry dude, baywatch is over!!!!

Re: Cotler this morning
I will never understand why people give so much weight to a self appointed expert on football recruiting.
Assuming he actually possessed the talent to evaluate recruits, do you really think he has the time to evaluate every player in the country?
I agree with cybsball20 last years class was far better than the star rating, so I will give the benefit of the doubt to the past staffs ability to evaluate talent over some self appointed expert.

Take it for what it was...one person's opinion and he's probably wrong...or...not. Exactly correct, in my view. Grains of salt folks, grains of salt. Also, I get sick of this and that rating service proclaiming "the University of X inked all 5 star recruits... while X State did far less". Ok for something to talk about but those stars dont start to shine until they enroll, and start playing. Lots of prospective stars burn out one way or another while some come true.

1-2 IMPACT DE, need someone that can apply pressure - last year we had zero... I think these are our greatest needs, and yet we have 0 commits at these positions. That's why this is a BAD recruiting class so far. I don't have a problem with the commits we have. It's just that they aren't addressing our greatest need, IMO.

Re: Cotler this morning
Just to be honest what part of the last 2 seasons would encourage any good recruits to come to Iowa State. Honestly if the Chizik staff did there homework they might have found a few diamond in the ruff type kids. However there are a lot of those recruits that were not offered by other schools for a reason.

Re: Cotler this morning
It's common to trash the recruit "star" rating system. Especially when your team has few 3, 4, or 5 star rated recruits. Some 1 and 2 stars blossom into fine players. For years, we've been rated at or near the bottom of the Big XII for recruiting. Sometimes we over-achieve. But look where we've finished the last 3 years. And look where TX and OU finish with their 4 and 5 star classes. Not every top ranked recruit works out, but if you get enough of them on a yearly basis......The trick, it seems to me, is to string together a few good classes. So I'm hoping that Coach Rhoads is as good a recruiter as he has been said to be.

Re: Cotler this morning
Lemming is an idiot. First off, he loved McCarney and is still mad at Pollard for getting rid of him. Second, he loves the hoks even helping them recruit on occasion in Chicago. The guy is either blind or biased if he can't see the talent in the 2008 class. Probably both. As for the 2009 class, we'll see. I do agree that they need to sign some DEs and DTs yet, but there is plenty of talent in the other commits. I mean, if our class is so bad, how come mighty NYD-bowl-bound iowa is telling two of our commits that they have a spot for them if they want to go there?

I think an emphasis needs to be put on the D side of things, and i would not be at all hesitant to bring in 3-4 quality defensive jucos. The immediate impact would far outweigh the notion of only utilizing high school players. I mean look no farther then Alabama - the core of that defense is the two 320 pd DT both jucos. If Alabama can bring in jucos while the HS kids get size and strength, ultimately the teams in a better position to compete. I think we do have some diamonds, and we do have a lot of quality kids that were directly recruited by them. The main selling point is playing time. Sure you can go to a Kansas or Oklahoma, but, you may not see the field until your a junior or senior. Until we start winning, selling playing time to land our top targets would be the number one selling factor.

Re: Cotler this morning
Lemming could say we had a great class and I wouldn't believe him. He is full of it and I've listened to him numerous times. He knows where his bread is buttered.
