John Skladany
I did not realize that Skladany was at Houston now. Did anyone else know that?? That might be a good option.....

Re: John Skladany
Yeah, he can stay down there. He usually had a good run defense but couldn't defend the pass to save his life- or his bosses job.

How about neither Skladany or Bolt?

Re: John Skladany
I always thought Skladany did a good job considering the pressure the offense (through lack of production and turnovers) put on his defense. I would love to have him back in Ames.

Re: John Skladany
Jburke,
I am glad you like Skladany. Is he your uncle?
The NFL stat is just the only stat available because the only NFL players there now will be from the 10 year tenure he was there.
All I know is that I have been watching 12+ years of recievers catching passes and there isn't a freaking Cyclone on the tv screen when it happens. I wouldn't care if our guys got burned over the top occaisionally because of a superior talent at reciever and qb, but good Lord, most Big12 qb's and others aren't going to consistently deliver against jamming and close corners. This isn't rocket science. FOR 12 FREAKING YEARS we have made every other quarterback against us look like Brett Favre because we play some kind of zone cover that does not suit our personnel. If we were Ohio State and we were playing Indiana, yeah we would look ok.
Paul Rhoads will end this. Thank you. Cover the reciever.

If I remember correctly under Skladany in the not so distant past we had a couple of great corners you might remember Ellis Hobbs, DeAndre Jackson, and LaMarcus Hicks, as well as some good playmaking Safeties Steve Paris and Nick Moser, all of which where under Skladany, and I don't remember QB's looking like Favre back then, in fact I remember a few getting shut down, ect, Kingsberry TTech, heisman candiate......
I have not doubt that Rhoads will put in a defense that will stop the run as well as cover the pass a lot batter then we have in recent years. I know he will put the right coaches in place to do it too. But honestly, Skladany was a lot better then all of you are giving him credit for. You look at his last year, when our talent level was at a low......

Re: John Skladany
John did a decent job for us, but I do not love him as our DC. I would not pitch a fit about it - but I don't want to see this program become a "return home" type of thing.
Plus, John schemes were rather odd at times. People could pass on us over the middle at will...corners way off the line, etc. Nah.
Perhaps bring him in to recruit though. We did have some pretty good defensive players when he was here. I think with better X's and O's - the defense would've been even better. -
Re: John Skladany
Pesonally, I hope most of his staff is new to ISU.i.e. not here before. PR has been coaching long enough to know who the good coaches are. Bring back some high IQ coaches AND bring in some new blood...not up and comers, proven ability... I do not wish to mimic the Mac Era...
My two cents

The grass always looks greener, on the other side of the fence, but the dog over there might be meaner, on the other side of the fence… Stay in your own yard, play in your own yard! -

I definately agree on this, so far I am kind of feeling like all of Rhoads selections are good old Iowa boys (ex. Bleil, Ash), I want more outsiders too....

Re: John Skladany
It was a brilliant move bringing Ash back. Gene would've been wise to retain him, but he wasn't.
Ash is a great recruiter and has done a fantastic job with our secondary. Fully support that hire - big time. Huge.

I understand hiring guys you are familiar with......but I agree that we need some outsiders. Hiring via the good ol' boy network didn't work out too well for Gene, I don't want another couple of years of that with the new coaching regime.
