We just hired a new football coach, right? And someone correct me if I am mistaken, but isn't our record in football the last three years 8-28? Okay, and when you saw the question that heads this thread did you have to think for just a second? Well that's all the proof anyone would need to just how low our mens BB program has sunk. And what's worse is that football with it's past record and.....A NEW COACH....just might be the answer!
If I was going to pick the program that will repond quicker, I would have to go with BB, even though my faith in GMAC has taken some serious hits this year. As another poster pointed out, at any point in time a couple of good/great BB players can completely change the fortunes of a team. Even having Wes Johnson back and healthy would make MBB better at ISU.
In football, it takes a great player like Seneca Wallace, to elevate a team from horrible to average. I don't see any players of his ability on the horizon. Hope I am dead wrong.
I suppose the answer to the question is in how we define success. I see basketball success as consistent NCAA tournament selection and an occasional multigame run into the tournament. I see football success as consistent bowl selection, with an occasional trip to a better bowl game. I think both of these is attainable with the current coaching staffs. I think that basketball has the capability of being a top 30 program, and football a top 50 program. I do not think that success for either program will mean an NCAA or bowl trip every year- maybe 3 out of every 4 or 5.
I would add this, however.
In football, there are 34 bowls, so 68 teams make a bowl game. There are only 119 teams eligible for bowls, so you have about 57% of all bowl-eligible teams make a bowl game...
In basketball, there are 64-65 teams (depending if you count the play-in game) out of 347 teams, which is only 18%... If you throw in the NIT (another 32 teams), then it's about 28%. I will grant since we play in a BCS conference we have advantages over the smaller programs, but I would say it's much more difficult to make a basketball postseason compared to football.
I don't drink the Kool-Aid, and I am done making excuses. Only keeping it real...
