My initial response to Rhoads was not positive or enthusiastic. But after seeing him during the announcement conference, and after watching him put together a staff, I'm excited. I think we've got a great thing going here. As Cyclones, we're nothing if not patient. And we're going to need to be patient with Coach Rhoads and his staff. I truly believe he's going to take this program in the right direction.
We are going to hit them when they come off the bus! That sold me. He has Passion.
Rhoads is respected within the coaching industry, but let's be real. His resume isn't that great and he's certainly not a "big name" guy. There's nothing wrong with that but to expect the general fan to be ultra excited about the hire is unrealistic IMO. I wasn't excited about the hire at first but he's done a nice job putting a staff together and his passion has won me over. Just because someone isn't excited about him doesn't make someone any less of a fan.
Time will tell.
Cyclone Nation meaning Cyclone fans in general, not people on cyclonenation.com so don't delete my post for ripping on other sites, because I'm not.
I've spoken with relatives who are ISU grads and casual ISU fans, and they seemed happy with the hire. Especially after they watched the press conference. They all seemed to really like that he was originally from Iowa, and believe that he'll stick around when he starts to have success.
Others are not impressed, but they all said we ended up with the better coach in the trade with Auburn.
The thing I like about Rhoads is that I feel we truely have a coach that won't jump at the next big opportunity. Coaches say they want to stay and build a winning program all the time, but I truely feel we don't have to worry about Coach Rhoads jumping ship. Another thing I liked hearing was my brother-in-law who is a high school coach already received a letter from Rhoads, pretty much introducing himself and letting it be known that he wants Iowa high school kids at Iowa State. That is something that you would never have Chiz doing.
Rhoads certainly wasn't a "sexy" hire, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is what happens on the field. Based on the press conference and coaching hires I like what Rhoads has done so far, but I think it's too early to declare this a good or bad hire.
he doesnt follow football much i see
Most of the people I know are very excited about Rhodes, but then I'm from Ankeny. I think for the people that don't know much about him, the more they see of him the more they will like him. In addition to his solid record as a defensive coordinator, he's a fairly young guy with plenty of charisma and enthusiasm for ISU, and a good brain to boot. I think his smarts are showing up in his assistant hires so far. I know I'm so much more pumped for ISU football now than if Chiz would have been back with another two years on his contract.
When he first was hired I thought it was a solid hire, but nothing that blew me away. That might be good though. We really won't know a lot about how he will do before he actually does it, which helps temper expectations a bit. Also, as his staff is being built, I have gotten even more excited.
