I guess my main point is that I don't think we will get very far by just copying what the other Big 12 schools are doing. We need to do something unique to compete.
This goes for the defensive side of the ball as well. Maybe we run the 4-2-5 or even play allot of dime coverage. Same thing though, we need to do something different to compete, as I don't think we will be successful trying to beat the other schools by copying them.
Do I know what those unique things would be? No. But, that's why I am a distribution manager rather than a football coach! On the offensive side I agree with you 100% Run a scheme that is different and creates an identity for ISU football.
Run an offense that you can recruit specifically to and establish consistency with year after year. If an OC leaves then the next in line steps up and continues to run that offense. Obviously being fundamentally sound is important for any offense and winning is most important, but I'm with you in hoping for some type of twist that we can build around.

If we can't tackle or block, it doesn't matter what kind of "unique" defense/offense we run.

Although, if we run the same system as texas/mizzou/neb/kansas/texas/okie state then opposing defenses will know exactly what to stop And we aren't as good as those previously mentioned offenses (so we will be easier to stop) ... a specific identity could be very potent

Re: What I want to see next season from our coordinators
I haven't read this thread, but I want our coordinators to focus on fundamentals in practice and make adjustments where necessary on gameday.

Re: What I want to see next season from our coordinators
I want the defense to get blocked - but not stay blocked.
I want the opposing WRs to catch the 3 yard pass - but be tackled on the spot.
I want RBs to zig when they should zig - but zag when they should zag.
I want to win when we should win - but also want to win a few we shouldn't.
I want steady 7 win seasons - but 9-10 wins every 5 years.
I want to be proud of the Cyclones - but about wins, not effort.

Re: What I want to see next season from our coordinators
On NCAA Football for PS2...
Unless it is a special teams or goaline play, I run nothing but dime defense. I blitz every down either from the corner or from the MLB. I recruit based on that defense.
My MLB has to be fast to cover and get across the field quickly. I line up my MLB based on where the TE is and if it is a running play I usually play him midrange off the line. If I think it's a pass play I will back him off the line deep and to the side of the TE. If I think it is a run I play him up.
My corners don't have to be big, but they have to be speedy. My safeties are picked mostly by their "awareness" or smarts. I use press coverage 50% of the time to give my blitzer a shot at getting to the QB. If a run play is a sweep to the outside then my corner on that side has a shot, if he is blocked my safety is usually there to clean it up.
I get burned once in a while, but most of the time I come out ahead... a lot ahead. I've won 11 straight national titles. The first 4 were with Michigan. The last 7 with Iowa State. My 11 year old erased my memory card otherwise I'd have proof.
See? I just described the defense we should be playing. I should be the DC! Someone get me a playstation controller and I'll show Coach Rhoades how its done! -

I don't think Chiz/Mac understands that we can't do a number of things with the talent disparity. Look at the wide receiver screens we try to run....all well and good, except our WR can't block and aren't exceptionally fast. Pass it across the field to gain 3 yards.

I would like to see a fast paced, no huddle offense...all the time.

Re: What I want to see next season from our coordinators
I would be pleased if our staff, from HC to S&C Coach to Coordinators all the way to the water boy and kickoff tee retriever, did there best to help create the most physical team possible on both sides of the ball.
It is no mistake that 3 of the last 4 teams in the NFL are absolutely the most phsyical in all of the league. The Titans and Giants would have made the top 5, and the reason the Cardinals are in it is because they've increased how physical they played late in the season, in particular defensively and with Edge James' running.
It's hard for me to see the team being physical playing a wide open, pass-happy spread offense. Ole Miss was purely more physical than Texas Tech. West Virginia was mentioned previously, but I liked the way Oregon ran versus Okie State even more. However, this would be hard without that fullback they have at QB, but I think our QBs could be very effective running the ball numerous times per game.

But are we going to get the athletes to "outphysical" other Big 12 teams? That's debatable, and yes, it would have to be a program wide philosophy. However, they were trying to force a square peg into a round hole by trying to make the personnel that we had fit into their scheme instead of adapting what they already had planned to win games. We in no way had the personnel to master the Tampa 2 defense. And while maybe we would have had success a few more years down the road, with the commitment to playing "their guys" that were better fits for the system, it was at the cost of winning games now.
That's a really long way of saying, I hope Herman sees what we have on offense and tries to adapt to the personnel that we have a bit instead of trying to force an awkward fit that sometimes bit us under Chiz.

We can block much better next year with new coaches with our current receivers. I expect tremendous improvement next year. Our WRs cannot block worth beans. Must be the coaching because other teams like nebraska do much better.

I don't know if they ever practiced blocking much in practice.....which...you should look at if you insist on running screens like we did.
