Friday Special Teams Thread

I'm going to be that guy. We still don't have a special teams coach and it is almost signing day!!! I figure most of us cyclone fans would feel the need for a good special teams coach since that had been our achilles heel in some huge games the past 10 years. Who is gonna get the job???

Thinking special teams, I immediately thought about Jamie Kohl and his camps. I know special teams is more than kicking, so it probably wouldn't be the best fit. But hit the Kohl's camp site - I didn't realize so many ISU kickers were counselors.

Yeah, the problem with Kohl is that the ST coach(es) need to coach a position too. I don't know that we want Jamie Kohl coaching our LBs or WRs. And then how much does Kohl know about kick coverages or protection?

IMO Jamie is a valuable asset to the program already. He recomended Mahoney who was a decent kicker for us as a true FR. And that recomendation came to a staff that he had no ties to (unlike the current staff since he played while Rhoads was at ISU). He is going to help our kickers at his summer camps and will help with evaluation of kickers, punters and long snappers as well.

I'm right there with ya - was more intrigued with all the former (and one current) Cyclone kickers on staff at their camps. Didn't realize they did a special camp at ISU last year, either. The into video shows all the D1/NFL prospects that have gone to their camps - WOW!

Jamie Kohl is coaching at AHS so its not like he has been segregate from all other parts of football. That being said, I highly doubt he is being considered for the ST coach.

I don't understand all the anxiety around these open positions. Sure, I'd like to see them filled but there is still alot of changes on coaching staffs going on right now. Even programs like Okie St, Michigan, Miami, USC and Auburn (just to name a few) are still filling positons or have openings. Nothing to loose sleep over IMHO.
