    Re: Walk-Ons

I would agree with those who have mentioned it's importance and disagree with those who suggested it might be dated or even a once a "cycle" type thing. From my experience Iowa currently has 2 NFLers and 2 starters from last year with a 3rd in the 2-deeps. With Bruegman likely to get serious NFL looks this spring so I think they are infinitely important if it is done diligently with a lot of effort from staff and player alike.

Also from what I can tell it is really just another level of recruitment and they are still quite selective about who they allow to walk-on. Hence why some programs like Nebbie and Iowa as well as others, are better at it than most.

I used to remember ISU usually having a few solid kids as well, right?

    Re: Walk-Ons

Schools like UNI and NWMS being so close make it tough to get a bunch of quality walk ons, especially when they are basically guaranteed a playoff run every year...

Walking on at Iowa State was a big deal that a lot of kids in iowa were all about when Mac was there, I expect it to pick up again with Paul Rhoads.

Good kid too, I went to church with him, but he was small then. I know his family well, hope he has success at ISU!

You should already know the answer. Earlier this week the Woodley kid from Southeast Polk, an elite all-stater running back, announced as a walk-on. On signing day, two good prospects from Cedar Falls High signed on as walk-ons. That's only the beginning of Rhoads's walk-on program.

there is a difference between a walk on and a prefferred walk on. walk ons are usually kids that havent really talked to coaches or anything and just try out. preferred walk ons are kids that pretty much automatically get on the team if they go to the school, but must earn a scholarship.

chizik did have a walkon program, but it wasnt very well publicized. i tried out, and lemme tell you there were some BEASTS there. he took only a handful of people, but there was around 100 that tried out, as opposed to the year before where they had like 13.

There was a caller on Marty n Miller yesterday talked about his friends son played Dline in the CIML and tore everyone up and was walking on at ISU. His dad didnt want his friend to say his name. I assume this is the kid. Good size and 1st team all state. Nice pickup as a walkon.
