i also read somewhere that the 2 early signees count against last years total, which would mean that we currently only have 19 for this year plus tuftee(greyshirt from last year) leaving 5 open spots for this year.
Your math may be off. Tuftee takes up one of those scholarships because he grayshirted last year and his scholarship kicked in at the semester break this year.
I also think the number of current scholarship players is 61 or 60, depending on whether one or two former walkons was put on scholarship.
Since you can only have 85 scholarship players on the team at one time, that leaves us with only 24 or 25 scholarships to give out. We've promised 22 of them, including Tuftee. So if there are no defections from scholarship players already on the team, it looks to me like we have just 2 or 3 to go.
Does anyone know for sure what walkons were awarded scholarships? If none of them currently has a scholarship, then the total number of current scholarship players is 59, plus 22 commitments, = 4 more to give out. The only way that changes is if some of the Iowa commits from this year are grayshirt candidates.
Its all about numbers defections, grades, transfers....the norm is between 23-25.......besides if you have 25 a year, then at any time you would have 100 players on scholarship...thats not possible. You can only have 85 so how does that explain the numbers............
The 85 is accounting for attrition and guys that never make it to campus ect. There are a few examples of guys that don't make it to campus due to grades ext. There not giving out more than 25 schollies. How many of those guys aren't on the roster. I don't know but i'll take a look... TBC.
If you compair the list of Commits on ESPN to the roster on Alabamas home site 6 players never made it to campus. And if Cody transfered at Semester so he could be in for the spring (guessing) he would have counted toward the previous year. Therefore 25...
Oh and here is a link that states 25 per year. 85 Total.

It's about half way down the page.
The NCAA also allows teams to sign three more than the limit allowed to enroll--counting on grade attrition, I guess. If Guy A qualifies, Guy B gets bounced to a grayshirt. Plus, some can count against last year. For example, Tuftee (and Sims and Spears) could count against the '08 limit of 25, but take slots of the 85 just cleared by guys graduating at midterm. It's a little complicated.
My list would be Marry and/or Mars, Lang, and a defensive end or two, if they can find good ones. Fabrice Pratt, wherevever he stands. At this stage, I'm not sure about a QB. That may be a "wait 'til next year" situation.
Marry or Mars would be great, but if we get neither we have 4 LB recruits already - thats pretty heavy. I would love another OT or OG and if Lang has decided to go to UConn we would have loved his speed....But WR was one position we could be very selective with, if we get him great, if not, were okay.... Add in there a quality DT and DE and i would call it a great class everything considered.
I already think our offense is going to be fun to watch this year anyways!
