This is the most idiotic post I have ever read. I now feel dumber!!! I can't believe some of the things said just to belittle the Cyclones without knowing what you're talking about. When some of you are talking to people in real life, they aren't walking away because you have bad breath.

I second this!

Why can't this money go to buying out McFarland and Bolt. On a side note, if we're paying them, why not force them to work, coach, etc. in some manner this Spring. The Waterloo Courier said it looks like it may cost $1.75 million to change the staff, far above the $750k from Auburn. We had to dip into the rainy day fund.

Istate - you trying to double your post numbers in one thread? -

I do have some sincere concerns about the financial stability inside the athletic department over the next 3-5 years if Rhodes doesn't win immediately. That's all. Time to sit back and watch the rest of the class fall into place. The final two, maybe three, commits could greatly increase the impact of this class.

Re: Chizzed again???
Istate's concerns are legitimate. We've budgeted spending based on maintaining and growing the revenue we've had for the past couple of years. The combination of the highest ticket prices in our history, the worst teams in our history, and the state of the economy, puts us on pretty shaky ground.
Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good. Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better. Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step. IPALOT - These teams haven't been great - but the worst? Far from it.

Did you miss the end of Jim Walden's time here, and the beginning of DMac's? Those were some pretty bad teams there.

It's fairly obvious you have a vandetta against Pollard.
That and your obsession with all things Hawkeye make me think there may be a serious personality disorder present.

Those were bad football teams (winless in the conference, losing to UNI), but they weren't any worse than we are now (winless in the conference, losing to UNI, 10 game losing streak, no road wins in 3 years). And at that time we at least had some pretty damn good basketball teams.
We've never hit rock bottom in both revenue sports at the same time, until now.

While I don't know all of the inner workings of these deals, the thing that popped into my head when I read the article this am was: How much money has ISU paid to coaches AFTER they no longer coached for ISU...it's a pretty big number. Wayne Morgan, Dan McCarney..did any of Dan's assistant's get extra money, too?
Huge number.

Huge number. McCarney's assistants were only paid thru the length of their contract, which was 1-year (thru May or June, 2007). The total cost of the 2006 McCarney-to-Chizik change was $675,000: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/colle...ignation_x.htm
The cost of the 2008 Chizik-to-Rhodes change is $1.75 million per the Waterloo Courier. Less the $750k Auburn buyout, ISU's cost is $1 million.
The cost of the Morgan-to-McDermott change was $1.525 million ($750,000/year x 2 years for Morgan's buyout, plus a $25k payment to UNI for hiring McDermott).
Don't forget that in his first 18 months, Pollard also replaced the wrestling, gymnastics, soccer, cross-country, track-and-field, women's golf, tennis, and softball coaches. Those are not high profile positions and the cost was not publicized, but it wasn't free.
All of this started a year after paying Larry Eustachy $960,000 to go away.
If we add it all up, ISU has spent about $5 million to fire and replace coaches from 2003-2008. You are right, it's a huge number. Embarassing, even. If that money was an investment that made our teams better, it might be worth it. But the only thing we have to show for all that money is teams that have gone from bowl games and NCAA/NIT tournaments to last place in the conference. If this were a business, the guy in charge would be fired.

There is real concern in the athletic department right now about the financial situation at ISU. So much so that in the next three years some prominent sports at ISU may be in trouble. If coach Rhoads doesn't win and win very quickly, it's going to get real ugly at ISU.
Jamie's A plan is that Alvarez retires before it hits the fan at ISU. I'm still in JP's corner. The only one that I have questioned was the GM hire. Everyone thought GC was the next big thing and no one could have foreseen that he would bail in two years.
You're right about one thing though, I think it is important for Coach Rhoades to get off to a good start next fall. The recruiting class doesn't look too bad and the schedule is not overly daunting. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
