Did anyone watch this team last year? I am not sure they could stop anyone. Until they can tackle and cover someone, it will be yet another long season.
four wins sound good. very nice step up.
Im not holding my breath on anything. I think the new staff and incoming players will have a big impact, but I honestly can not justify being too positive about this next season just yet. Of course all that will change by the time August rolls around.
Offense will be great.
Defense... In the words of Borat, "theesa one... not so much..."
Depends on your definition of "step up".
Personally, I think 6 wins this season would be a huge, highly satisfying "step up".
As far as being seriously competitive, I wouldn't expect that until at least 2010 at the earliest.
So the big question to me is just what juco Taylor Martin can add at strongside end, because I suspect that redshirt Cleyon Laing will at least be a nice complement there.
I see your point about the linebackers, but there are four seniors there. And I'm kinda thinking that a move away from the Tampa-2 might just help minimize Jesse Smith's liabilities, and emphasize his strengths.
For me, that's an understatement. :biggrin:Quote:
Not worried about the offense at all though.
Good point. Left tackle is important--as we saw the seasons before Doug Dedrick arrived.Quote:
I'd also argue that the line that began to gel lost its most important player after last season. Guess we'll see.
After all, the thing that I like about Herman wasn't that he's a Mensa member, but that he fielded productive, efficient offenses at Rice, making the most of the talent he had. And I'm pretty sure he has more talent to work with here.
Comments above. Not trying to down play the optimism as I think we could be better, but knowing that the team has to get use to a new coaching staff and philosphy/terminology, I don't know that we will be much better than 6-6 at best and 2-10 at worst.
Aside from the shortcomings of the defense, I was also trying to assume a reasonable adjustment period to a new coaching staff. But the offense returns a lot of players, talented players, and the new offense shouldn't be a vast departure from the old one. I really don't see us losing to North Dakota State, Kent State or Army, and beating Iowa in Ames is a real possibility. By the time conference play starts, I'd hope that all of the kinks are worked out of their system.
We just need to win the games we should win.
Look at all the games you would have thought we would have won w/ Chizik:
a) '07 Kent St - Loss
b) '07 UNI - Loss
c) '07 @Toledo - Loss
d) '08 @UNLV
Not to mention these games that ISU almost pulled the upset:
e) '08 @Iowa or '08 Kansas - should have won, one of these games.
f) '08 @ Colorado
We have the talent to go to a bowl, but we need a fast start. We should be better with everyone back. I hope the coaching transition goes smooth and we don't skip a beat.
There is no reason we can't take a step up and make it back to a bowl. 6-6 is pretty mediocre and is not that hard. Heck we were just a handful of plays away from it last year.
We should have an excellent offense and pretty good special teams. Defense can't possibly be worse than last year, so it will either improve or be a wash.
6 or 7 wins is definitely possible! I like your thinking.
Not sure if you believe it, but I'm on board with your assessment. I do think we'll step up this year in football! There is nothing in Rhoads' past that would make me think otherwise. Most signs now point to improvement! And, like others have said, getting more than 2 wins shouldn't be too hard.
Good write-up and good thread!
If by "Big Step Up" you mean finally stop someone on 3rd down, then I sure hope so. I am with the optimists here that believe we aren't that far off from being a bowl team. The big question really is going to be the Defense. Really, last year, they didn't even have to come up big for us, just make some stops here and there and we probably could have had 4 or 5 wins last year. Alas, we had 2 though. And when I said I was with the optimists, that in agreeing that we weren't that far off from being a bowl team. In reality, our Defense was terrible and to be honest, I've come to the conclusion that when when this team starts proving they can win, I'll start believing it.
I'll be cheering and rooting, I love ISU football, it's just that no matter how good I want to feel about the upcoming season, I can't.
I really think our offense is going to be exciting to watch, but we still don't have the D to compete in the big 12 consistently despite the upperclassmen. I don't think we'll go 0-fer but big 12 wins will be hard to come by. It's gonna be a process. And don't get me wrong I cannot wait for football season, heck even the spring game and VEISHEA to come, but I see about a 3 win season next fall. I really, really hope I eat some charbroiled crow, but that's how I see it.
It is nice to have a real coaching staff again.
The only thing that kept our 2008 defense from possibly being the worst scoring defense in the nation last year was their ability to force turnovers. ISU was a respectable # 36 in the nation in turnovers forced. Other than that, there wasn't much to smile about.
