Dan McCarney still laughs at an image of a young Sage Rosenfels.

McCarney remembers the practical joke he played on Rosenfels when the quarterback was beginning his senior season at Iowa State. McCarney sensed his players were growing tired of the rigors of two-a-day practices, and tempers were flaring.

To lighten the mood, McCarney pulled out a surprise at a team meeting.

That's a really long read, but worth it!

Sage is from the same county as me. No I don't know him or his family personally, but I did run into his father in law a few years back and asked him how Sage was doing in the NFL. I remember him telling me Sage was unhappy he wasn't playing more. I pointed out that he was getting paid really good money to ride the bench. His father in law agreed, but said Sage is a compeitive guy and wants to contribute. My respect level went up a notch higher when I heard that.

He wasn't as exciting as Seneca Wallace, but in retrospect more dependable. He didn't make many mistakes. I wonder if he makes it back to ISU at all? Paul Rhoads probably knows him personally since he was on staff when Sage was on the team. Maybe he'll be able to make it down to a few games now!

Maria (his wife) and Sage are both fun to hang around. Met him when he was in college and he's still very down to earth. He was quite excited to be closer to home.
