Outside of Gair and Thompson, where did the invisible recruiting class of 2004 go?
What will the secondary look like this fall?
It appears to me that we have too much talent at the CB positions to leave guys off the field. Therefore, the 5 DB talk and strategy has come around.
My questions: How will the defensive backfield look this fall?
Who will be the starters? Who will change into safety/nickleback rolls?
Starters Imo:
LCB: LJ - stud, hard nosed hitter (Reesing will think twice about trying to expose a young corner this year!)
RCB: Kennard Banks- played very well before the injury last fall, nice surprise.
SS: David Simms- I'm crossing my fingers, we need someone to step up big in this spot.
FS: James Smith- With a new defensive strategy and Coach Ash's experience hopefully James can adapt and have a solid Sr year.
5th DB: Allen Bell/Ter'ran Benton (These two have the best size to fit into a hybrid safety/nickel role.) Both stepped-up nicely in their first years, although Bell seemed to have a rough go of it last year. Let's hope these guys can add the depth we desparately need at these spots.
Anybody know of spring weight room progressions? If Bell and/or Benton put on 10 lbs, they could be an excellent piece to the puzzle. I would love to see all the talent we appear to have in these spots on the field. I think it's clear this will be the most talented area of the D this season. Hopefully the DL and LB's can force pressure to give these guys a chance.
Thoughts?
I think that we have a solid group of DBs right now. The group of Smith, Sims, LJ, KBanks are all good athletes that can hit. They are going to knock some WRs around this year. I also think that there is solid depth in McDowell, Benton, Bell and Sandvig. The key to them having any success is the pass rush, but I have no doubt the talent is there to be a dominant group of DBs.
I think that Linder seems a little stiff to be an impact player for us. As for the true FR, I guess you never know, but IMO the only way they see the field this year is if they can contribute on special teams. The guy I'm excited for is Reeves. There's something about his game that I really like.
I don't know if we really know how good the secondary was last year. When the d-line is simply playing their lane in containing the QB, it gives way too much time for a route to develop. My hope is that our d-line can be cut free and reek a little havoc; that will/would help our secondary the most.
Bell is a safety right now.
