I gotta say, I love seeing that 5 wideout set with 4 guys split out to one side. I really hope Herman brings that with him to Ames. It sets up the little bubble screen really, really well. I could see someone like Money Reynolds, or any of our receivers really doing well with something like that.Quote:

AA is going to be asked to do a lot this fall. I just hope he can keep his TOs down. He's going to put up monster numbers offensively, both in the air and on the ground. I bet the receivers love this. Everybody will get a lot of touches.

Last, and this kind of puts my concerns to rest, I like the short yardage "big" set. 7 on the line, TE just off and RB a yard off too. QB starts no further back than a halfback would in an I. I think with the size Austen has he can continue to get those tough 1 or 2 yards.
It'll be interesting to see how many options T. Herman has outta each formation. It seemed like in the past, if we ran a cartain formation, everyone knew what play we were gonna run. I know Herman is smarter than that. I will be SOOO excited if you can see the fear in the opponents eyes cause they have no idea what is coming, but they have 3-4 WR right in front of em.
The QB for Rice last year was the leading rusher, and apparently running the ball is not his forte. Makes me think the wide splits will open some huge holes for AA to tuck it and take off for good yards quite a few times during a game.
Every time my old high school OC came up with a new formation, he made sure that he included a package that provided options to attack every every hole on the field. If the defense showed a pattern of cheating, he made them pay.Quote:

Frankly, I don't know that formation matters so much about defending the Spread. The Spread is designed to do a lot things, but a couple of them specifically help the offense. The wider splits make it tough for defense to run stunts. This makes life a lot easier for the OL. The Spread also help OC's and QB's determine the coverages a bit easier.
I think it's natural sometimes for people to say the 3-4 is the best way to beat the Spread because if you can get pressure with 3 it gives you more options in the secondary. In my experience, you want to somewhat match your defensive personnel with the personnel the offense has. What we do, and this is at the HS level, is simply identify the number of TE's and RB's there are on the field. This quickly lets you identify how many DB's you want. If they are running say 1 TE and 2 RB's you don't want to have a nickel or dime package on the field with only 3 down linemen.
The key to beating the Spread isn't so much formation as it is a personnel game. And the offense largely controls those cards by dictating pace and formation. So, if you're a rock solid 3-4 team, but you don't have the DL personnel to run a solid 4 or 5 man front and I am the OC, I'll run option on you all day on those 3 down linemen.
So, in short, to beat the Spread you need fast, smart players that can run multiple fronts. You need to be able to mask coverages as much as possible and force the QB into making bad decisions. You need to try and isolate anyone on the OL that is a weak spot, and this a DISADVANTAGE in the Spread, if you have that guy that tires or is hurting and the defense finds him you better have a backup. And never, ever be afraid to double cover that stud they put on the outside or he'll go double catches on you for triple digit yards and maybe 2 TD's.
Spilts? What's the big deal about spilts? You grab a towel, you wipe 'em up. Simple as that.

I certainly can't speak for Jon, however here are a few remarks supporting his contention:
- The first ingredient for EITHER a 4-3 or 3-4 to work is that it requires disciplined play. What does that mean? It means that guys who are lined up on or near the LOS must maintain control of their gaps ... no matter what. One of the standard caveats of teams who rely on speed rush ends is that such guys are sometimes lousy at being disciplined with regard to their positioning and controlling their gaps (because their instinct is to tee-off on the QB whenever there seems to be an opportunity). Playing disciplined football is pretty much synonymous with saying that the D is playing strict assignment football.
- As for the 3-4 working. I'm not as sure where he was going there. I agree with what you said about the importance of counting hats. Of course, the benefit that the 3-4 affords is that if you have the personnel to do it ... bringing up an OLB as a LEO LB (basically a hybrid DE) allows you the best of both worlds. You can have guys drop back into coverage OR you can still effectively have 4 guys on the line ... it's then all dependent on what the D sees. Also, for 3-4 Ds with the personnel to pull it off ... an athletic but huge NT can still manage 2 gaps on the interior line ... even with wide splits.
I don't even know what he is talking countering the Spread or just the OL splits. It'd be nice for him to elaborate.Quote:

In the end, it's a lot about personnel and scheme. You can't just throw a 3-4 out there if you don't have a effective 2 gap DT, as mentioned.
Also, are we talking about defending the Spread Option (run-centric) or the Spread (pass-centric)...or, as the title suggests, is he just talking about countering wider OL gaps?
