Recruiting - why i'm gettin excited!!!!
In listening to the Bill Bleil interview, i love to hear the insight on how they target players and then work backwards. But, they're not afraid to recruit someone because Texas or Oklahoma etc etc are recruiting them. I think they realize that they will not score with their number ones a lot, but, by working at those guys, they might find one here or there that finds exactly what they're looking for in a university here at ISU.
Thats how you build a strong team - look no further then Kansas....the majority of their recruiting was done in texas and kansas and they put together solid 3* ladened classes that have now developed into a very good, deep football team from the same area ISU sits now, KU was just 4 years ago. It can be done with the right coach, right staff and proven exciting offensive and defensive systems.
Now as many will attest, i really liked the Chizik hiring, because of his connections to florida. However, we're starting to see just how badly Chizik missed it with his assistant coaches hirings. The only one he hit success with was Scott Fountain!!!! To be able to recruit and coach is all about the assistants and the benefits that having exciting, top tier type of OC and DC staff's bring to the table.
Right now scout has a report up about Marcus Lucas, a gifted wr out of missouri. IMO last year, we would not even be close on this guy. he's a top 150 talent, skill position, that has power schools looking at him and he choses to visit ISU's 1 day camp a week ago....
The reason - Tom Hermans offense!! We don't get that visit with McFarlands offense.
i'm sure as Coach Burnham begins to turn the corner with his unit, that he will be doing the same thing with his contacts in florida. With guys like Ash, Wells, Bleil, Herman etc etc out there recruiting, were tapping into new talent areas and getting looks on some extremely talented guys that will continue our rise in the level of talent as long as the product on the field is competitive. That all loses steam if we go 0-12 and look bad doing it.....
IF and its a big if, IF were able to go 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 that recruiting window will be open and we will have to take full advantage of the excitement...Kansas has and their team is extremely deep and talented and should stay competitive for a long time!!!!

I'm not quite sure what you consider Sedrick Johnson. He was rated a little lower (#34 WR compared to #18 for Lucas) but he still fits what you're talking about. Came here over aTm, Nebraska, Florida and Michigan.

I love the attitude this staff has and it seems they have the drive and dedication, but we still only have 1 commit for the '10 class. I'm pumped up too, but I need to see some results.

It seems like a lot of guys that we are in on(in the rivals database, at least) are committing to other schools before even giving us a chance. Paul seems like a great guy, and has put together a great staff, but we have a recent history of 5-19 that we need to overcome. I think we are going to have prove something on the field this fall and get some guys that are planning on committing later on vs getting a lot of guys that want to decide before the season starts.
Not that I am worried, but I don't expect a lof of early commitments this year.

Re: Recruiting - why i'm gettin excited!!!!
I thought that McFarland was a decent hire. Pretty good OL coach and the offense was decent. Definitely doesn't have the wow factor that Herman's hiring did though. Other than that, I thought that Pelton, Rodgers and Peterson were good hires and so was Fountain. Bolt was the bad hire and so were the two secondary coaches. Looking back, the S&C coaches weren't as good as Rhoads' guys either.
Rhoads hit home runs with both coordinators, McKnight for S&C and Ash. The rest of his coaches have a lot to prove yet IMO. They might turn out to be great, but they haven't been at this level yet.

Re: Recruiting - why i'm gettin excited!!!!
What would happen on this board if we were to pull in the #1 basketball recruit and a #1 football recruit, better yet, have them both commit on the same day. It wouldn't even matter what the rest of the class looked like, this site would crash, no question about it.

BTW, on a hok site, I saw where Hoch was down to them and Mizzou. That's a blow in-state. We have to get Kohler and Scherff on board! I'd love to see someone like Massner, Chia, Seiser, Heissel or Vier blow up at camp this week.

GC also played many more team members each game which means we have many more players with actual game day experience. That should also help this year but we can't count it since GC was a traitor.
