I liked D-Mac, but 5-6 wins per season won't get it done in a major conference.

Re: Dan McCarney?????
Mac wasn't a head coach who could do much more than win 7 games every other season. He has a great personality and knew some of his stuff but schouldn't be a D1 head coach. Assistant coaching and coordinator spots are great for him. He brought a lot of intensity to his team. Everyone needs a Dan Maccarney on their coaching staff, just as an assistant rather than a head coach.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good. Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better. Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step. My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk,superdorf, clones_jer. That is all. -

These same mistakes had cost him potential big wins against Wyoming, K-State (1999), etc.
As others have said, I am forever grateful for what he did here, but it was time to move on. All of Pollard's firings have been the right move in my eyes. The hirings have been worse than any reasonable person could expect. It's like getting rid of a Mazda, buying a Lexus, and then it turns out to be a lemon. I find Hawk fans' universal hatered/disapproval of Pollard to be a sign that he is doing his job well. What mistakes? If Culbertson makes a kick against Mizzou in '04, they win the North. In 2005, all Nick Leaders had to do was not drop a pick that would have sealed ISU's first win in Lincoln since Jimmy Carter was President. Shaggy could have made that kick against Kansas. If either one of those last two happens, ISU wins the North. Hard to blame Dan for that.
A win over Wyoming would have been considered "big?"

Not even close. Pollards hirings are like trading in a Mazda for a Yugo, trying to dress up the Yugo and sell it like a Lexus, then being surprised when the Yugo turns out to be a Yugo. Good to see another Hawk fan weighing in.

Re: Dan McCarney?????
Not the right move at the time, especially not to hire a D-bag like Chizik. Sending a man who lived and breathed Iowa State FB out the door for a tool like Chizik just hurts. I get a kick out of listening to ISU fans talking about how Dmac couldn't recruit, develop, or coach talent, when the record shows he was at least pretty decent at at least 2 out of the 3.
God knows Dmac owned the rape concealing, "tax-payers supporting my kid when I make 2 mil a year" piece of crap coach from Eastern Iowa.
However, I really like the way Rhoads' program is shaping up, and I think it may work out better for us in the end.

They will try to convince you that it is better to lose every game and make a little more revenue. Same conversation I had with an Iowa fan friend of mine who worked in sports in Eastern Iowa. He told me that revenue for an Athletic Program was more important than wins and losses as a fan, at that time I told him he was border-line ********.

Culbertson was nice kid who gave his all, but the Big 12 is generally not a place for walk-on kickers, especially with the likes of Mason Crosby hanging around...
