Tom O was Phillip's biggest supporter. He lost a lot of my respect in that episode.

Look at the bright side, the California penal system football league will pick up a strong player.

It is easy, as a Cyclone fan, to hate Osborne because of the annual beatings ISU obsorbed during his tenure in Lincoln. But in reality, his biggest sin in the whole Phillips nightmare was in trying to give a young man with an unbelievably unfortunate past a chance at a better life.
T.O. knew that without football, Lawrence Phillips was doomed to a life most likely behind bars. And he was certainly right.
Nebraska would have beaten the daylights out of Florida and won the 1995 national championship with or without Lawrence Phillips in the line-up. Do you remember who played behind Phillips. It was none other than Ahmann Green. The easiest thing for Osborne to have done would have been to have thrown Phillips off of the team completely and let Green rush for 200 yards per game the rest of the way.
Osborne put his reputation on the line trying to give a young man a second chance at making something out of his life. Unfortunately, Phillips was incapable of capitalizing on that second chance.
The failure in Lawrence Phillips lies solely with Lawrence Phillips, not in Tom Osborne. Osborne simply gave a born loser a second chance. His only sin was the sin of compassion.
Tom Osborne (nor the Nebraska program) certainly isn't the only college coach to get burned by a college athlete. Unfortunately college sports over the past 20-25 years has become littered with an enormous share of low lifes who have embarrassed the very institutions that gave them an opportunity achieve a better life.

This. +1
Hope is not a method. Soon is not a time.
