What McCarney did for ISU has been quickly forgotten by a lot of fans around here. I know that by the time that ISU and McCarney parted ways that a portion of the fanbase was sick of the positive spin by Dan, but lets not forget that he put every drop of sweat and emotion into this program to get it to the point that we could talk about bowl games. I love what coach Rhoads has said and done here so far, but it pales in comparison to what McCarney accomplished while here.
Agreed. I think it is going to take some time before we really know. I think the key things to remember is that he has been at ISU before when ISU was winning games and going to bowl games so definitely was learning what it takes to win at ISU from Mac. He also spent some time under quality head coaches at Pitt and Auburn so he pretty good ideas of how to run a program.
Dumb thread.
Anyone who says something like this obviously has been drinking too much *spiked* kool-aide.
Who knows yet about CPR, but I can tell you Danny Mac never impressed me as a head coach.
This idea is crazy. He hasn't even coached a game.
In my opinion....
Dan and Paul are both great guys.
Both love ISU and love the job.
Both get along great with players.
Paul is a much better "coach" though.
Dan sticks to a few players regardless of how they're doing instead of shaking things up.
Paul is unproven at ISU and can't be considered "better" but he certainly has the coaching abilities to take what Dan did and get an additional 1,2 or 3 wins each year on top of that with the same talent.
Just my opinion.
Already better? How the heck could he be "already better" when he hasn't even coached a game?
Doesn't make any sense
We won't know anything about Rhoads until at least year 4 when his first class is seniors and RS-Juniors. Recruiting makes or breaks you in college sports.
We know what Mac's flaws were. Right now, CPR doubtless has some, but we have no idea what they are...
I agree 100%. Saying a guy with a career record of 0-0 is better than someone who has actually coached is about as bright as the Iowa fans who know their backup quarterback who has never taken a snap is better than their starting quarterback.
Let Rhoads take ISU to a bowl game or two or five, then get back to us.
Rhoads def. lost that game to a quarterback who is still an NFL quarter who now is competing with Brett Favre for a starting spot at the Vikings.
In 2001, his defensive unit ranked among the nation's top 30 in five different categories at season's end. Additionally, Pitt finished with 38 quarterback sacks. In 2002, the Panthers defense ranked among the nation's top 25 in an impressive seven different categories. 2004 Big East Champs. Also impressive was he coached 2 kids to be 1st team all American LB's, 2 academic all American DL's, 2 Defensive player of the year awards and 1 scholar-Athlete of the year award. Topping it off with a first round draft pick CB.
These are the kinda stats I think he is capable of again after seeing that he went to a team (pitt) much like mac did with ISU that hadnt been to a bowl game in quite some time. 1 in 11 years before he started at DC at pitt to be exact. To say he is better than mac right now is gonna be a matter of opinion but Id say he is more than off to a great start to passing up mac in his future at ISU. In my mind that should be everyones hope and goal. I bet Mac would wish the same.
