In 2002, the Panthers defense ranked among the nation's top 25 in an impressive seven different categories. 2004 Big East Champs. Also impressive was he coached 2 kids to be 1st team all American LB's, 2 academic all American DL's, 2 Defensive player of the year awards and 1 scholar-Athlete of the year award. Topping it off with a first round draft pick CB.
These are the kinda stats I think he is capable of again after seeing that he went to a team (pitt) much like mac did with ISU that hadnt been to a bowl game in quite some time. 1 in 11 years before he started at DC at pitt to be exact. To say he is better than mac right now is gonna be a matter of opinion but Id say he is more than off to a great start to passing up mac in his future at ISU. In my mind that should be everyones hope and goal. I bet Mac would wish the same. To me that is one of Mac's greatest traits is he is actually rooting for CPR to suceed - Mac is a class act.

I love what coach Rhoads has said and done here so far, but it pales in comparison to what McCarney accomplished while here. totally agree with this statement, i feel that a lot of hawk fans are the same way when they start the fire ferentz crap when he loses a couple games, people forget what he has done since he took over at iowa. i guess its just one of those what have you done for me lately deals.

If Iowa fires Captain Kirk, they would deserve any and all losses that would follow.

Erik, I was yanking prdhawk's chain with this post. Do you really think the University needs someone with legal training to tell them the stuff their athletes are getting arrested for is illegal? Their track recorde on legal advisors is not good. They sacrificed the last one. The successful applicant is advised to avoid signing any long term leases.

Thinking back on all of Macs best wins, ISU had the talent to win all of them, including all of the wins vs. Iowa and Nebraska.

With that said, motivating is part of coaching I guess!

With that said, motivating is part of coaching I guess! Yeah, I am not sure if there were many times that Mac out schemed his opponent. I also don't think any of those Iowa teams had vastly better talent than ISU.

I appreciate the effort that DM gave at ISU, but if DM is the standard for excellence then I might as well find a new school to support.
This is just my opinion, but I find that far more Hawk fans seem disappointed that DM is no longer at ISU than ISU fans.
I want to strive for more than mediocrity. I hope that PR is the guy that can get us there.
If your biggest rival misses your coach, that probably isn't a good sign

I love how people think Mac just clapped his hands and gave great speeches - good god. Ask anyone who really knows football - like maybe a former Mac player - or Paul Rhoads, who virtually copies him in practice drills and organization, recruiting philsophy, etc. - if Mac knew "schemes" or not.

If your biggest rival misses your coach, that probably isn't a good sign I think the iowa fans respected him, especially as a former Hawkeye player and coach. I respect his as well, but he was not a great coach. He was a cheerleader and motivator. Good kind of coach to have if you have the coordinators and staff to handle the X's and O's for you. Bad if you have to depend on motivation being your main weapon. If Mac ever ran an innovative offense like Herman will be running, motivation would just be icing on the cake. Instead, Mac's playcalling seemed very predictable and at many times, overly conservative. Mac played not to lose in a lot of games and blew several chances at great seasons with his best talent.

Who do you think Mac out-coached? What games did we win against superior talent? I really liked the guy, but I came away dissapointed a lot too.

2001 - Winning at Mizzou, 20-14
2002 - Beating Nebraska at home, 36-14; we were #19, Huskers were #20, yet we were underdogs.
2002 - Beating Iowa in IC, 36-31; yep, same Iowa team that went to Orange Bowl.
2004 - Beating Nebraska again at home, 34-27
2004 - Beating defending Big 12 champion K-State at Manahattan, 37-23, breaking 10-game losing streak to KSU.
2005 - Beating #22 Colorado at home, 30-16. People talk about the choke job the following week, but forget about this upset to get us there.
And, for all the Mac haters, here's the biggest "upset" of all: Mac being voted Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2004 by conference coaches!

He does deserve more respect than he's getting..
